New Computer, Seeking Opinions

Thread Starter
Q6600 stock at 2.4 GHZ, Zalman 9700
EVGA nForce 780i A1
EVGA geForce 8800 GT 512 MB GDDR3 PCIe 2.0
OCZ SLI-ready PC8500(1066 MHZ) 2x1024
Seagate Barracuda 250gb SATA hd x1
Samsung SATA DVD Burner
Antec 900 Case

This is not my first build. However, the computers I have built in the past have been a piece of gum on the ground compared to this system. I am ordering all parts from the egg and I have around a 1100 $ limit for this gaming rig. This is going to be a gaming computer as well as a workstation in the future. I am an engineering major and soon I will need the quad cores to make CAD programs a breeze.

I already have a 600w ULTRA psu, with that in mind... im seeking your guys opinions on my proposed rig. I have yet to overclock a system before, but I plan to do it just for fun. even though I might not have any use for the extra umph...

suggestions, opinions, replacement suggestions... all that is welcome...

PC8500 ram is waste of money... It's just factory overclocked PC6400 ram. Most PC6400 will get to 1000mhz+, not like it makes a huge difference anyway. The real world performance boost is so small. Not worth the cost.

What OS do you plan on running?

the g.skill memory throws off my budget a little bit, the ocz ram has a 35 mail in rebate and it has fairly decent reviews.

minus the ram, what do you guys think of the other components. mainly the motherboard. ive heard mixed feelings about the evga 780i mobo. and gibson... do you like the antec 900 case?

im planning on running xp pro 32 bit, untill everythings set up. then ill buy myself 64 bit vista once i know my computer's hardware is all good and i can trouble shoot a software issue if vista creates one... will also buy more ram at that point, so you suggest going with 800 mhz ram? over 1066

Honestly, just buy whatever case you think looks best. I'm a fan of NZXT, all of their stuff is nice looking and pretty cheap.

I can't comment specifically on your motherboard... I just know nvidia makes terrible chipsets in general It's sad that people are stuck with them if they wanna do SLI.

If you're going SLI, it might be better to pick up 9600gt's instead. They scale a lot better.

And yeah if you plan on going with vista... Just buy 4gb ddr800 now. You can pick up some reapers for $60 after rebate.

well i want decent airflow and a nice array of options, the antec 900 seems to offer great space and people seem to like it. i think one 8800gt is more within my budget then 2 9600gt's, what 9600 do you recommend.

keep in mind i also want to finally be able to play cris, cod4, css:s, and finally get a good frame rate in WOW.
