Optimal OC for 8800gt - Page 2

You know that GPUs don't do that "5MHz at a time" method very well cause they overclock in "steps."

Like i know the last 3 "steps" of the core clock on my 8800GTS 640MB are 648, 675, and 705. The memory and the shaders work the same way...

Like I said, I've never overclocked GPUs before, almost everything except them to be honest. I was just saying that because that's what the guy said earlier in the thread *shrugs*

So do I just move it up a step at a time? And where do I find the shader clock?

Also, in ATItool I see the settings for Core clock and Memory Clock in the following categories:

2D
3D Low Power
3D Perf.

So if I'm bumping the core up 5mhz, do I do it to each one listed as Core? Where are the shader clock settings? Sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions, I like to be cautious and know what I'm doing.

EDIT: Thanks Zeag! +rep
Use rivatuner to OC and ati tool to artifact scan all the options will be in rivatuner google a guide to learn exactly how to use it. You can only hurt the chip if you increase the temps to unsafe level, or do a voltmod and raise the voltage (requires bios flash or soddering iron).

Rivatuner should have the shader clock, as for finding the "steps" use GPU-z...you'll notice that if you only bump it up 5MHz, that sometimes the clock speed won't change.

you will almost have to get a 100Mhz OC before you might see any improvement in game.

Alright, thanks for all the help guys! One last question though, how long should I scan artifacts for, and what should I be looking for when I'm scanning?

EDIT: Blargh, I don't see the steps in GPU-Z.

GPU-z doesn't show the stepping phenomenon. Best way to tell is the rivatuner graphs. Click top button (to the right, next to the control, er, box, that says 256-bit G92, etc) then the graphs should be filmstrip with magnifying glass button.

I prefer to run a few crysis benches, along with a 3dmark06 run, to test my stability, but to each their own.

The 8800GT series does not have separate clocks for 2d, 3dlow+high. Just use the 3d high sliders, that's what your card is going to be running at all the time. Some older cards had separate 2d/3d modes (and ATI cards still do) but not the 8800 series.

do what i do. crank it pretty high and test that setting if you get artifacts back down.
