E6420 overclock....

Thread Starter
Was quite surprised to find out once I got my TRUE I am able to get this thing to 3.501 Ghz on Air.

Attached is the preliminary shot...started Orthos and will let it run overnight for a full verification, but I have to admit I am very please.

With my overclocked video card(s)][SLI] from stock 513/793/1188 to 620/961/1601 and my new cpu clock I just broke 15000 in 3dmark06.

Man Core2Duos really are a work of art.

Nice! My memory or mobo doesn't like over 425fsb too much. I couldn't get 3.5 stable for more than a few hours. 3.4 usually lasts awhile then i start getting BSOD (fold 24/7).

I guess I am even more surprised that I am doing it with 675Mhz RAM(its what it said...pc5400). I have been given the impression RAM can sometimes hold your overclock back. I have always ran unlinked thought so maybe that helps.

I ran my RAM at 667Mhz for the longest because that is what it detected, but since I started trying to go above 3.2 I moved it up a little.

Getting the new power supply helped as well. I was clocked at 3.2 Ghz with a 8800GTS and a 4x1GB Sticks of RAM on a 430W power supply

When I finally got my TRUE it allowed me the chance to go higher. I was already hitting 50C with my old heatsink at 3.2.

I got mine stable at 3.0ghz with stock voltage on air.
Hit a wall at 3.4ghz (on air too). Failed orthos around 2 hours.

The 3.4ghz temps were around 58 load

I was running at 53C last night with a 20C ambient and from what I have seen from online reviews the TRUE is 3-5C better than the Typhoon

Yeah that is the Big Typhoon holding you back there. I had one before but never really liked it. I only had the push pin version and it was never stable on the board. On the flip side..I paid $49.99 for my Big Typhoon, but only paid $56.64 for the TRUE, so it was a no brainer for me.

Just finished 8 hours of Orthos with no problems....so I am calling official.

My typhoon is the bolt-down version, the temps aren't holding me back, I have another 5 degrees or so of legroom, my hardware is holding me back.

I also got the typhoon WAAYY before the TRUE came out.

You said load temps at 3.4 were 58C. How do you have more legroom when the chips thermal limit is 60.1C?

That is why I said it was holding you back. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

I have my RAM at 4-4-4-12-1T running 675Mhz @ 2.0v
