A TV Tuner for IPTV?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about converting an old computer into a HTPC, and the only thing holding me back is my lack of knowledge of TV tuner cards and if they will work with IPTV. I'm not sure how they normally work (if the cabe box comes before or you just run it straight into the TV tuner), but I don't think I could make this work out.

I would really appreciate it if you would link me to a good article or some good information on TV Tuners, or would just tell me if I could get this to work even though I have IPTV.

I don't really know anything about IPTV except that I think my friend in Milwaukee has it through AT&T. Am I correct in saying that your setup involves a central control box that the internet and cable TV comes into from the drop line outside and then branches out from there to various rooms with their own STB's via ethernet wire?
IF SO: I assume the STB's have an Svideo out to connect to a TV. This can plug into any tuner that you buy. Know that only one STB will work with one tuner, so if you want to record multiple channels at one time you'll need additional STB's and setup an IR blaster to change channels on the STB's.

Maybe you could describe the IPTV setup if it's not the way I thinking it is.

I wasn't really paying attention when it was installed, but that sounds correct. Each of four rooms has a STB that is connected via ethernet cable, which the TV is plugged into. An yes there is an S-video out on each of the STBs.

Is there any way to be able to control what channel the STB is outputting from the computer?

Also, could you recommend me a TV tuner card for this situation?

The computer can change the channel on the STB using an IR blaster. I use a USB-UIRT. I costs about $50. You can purchase the Hauppauge tuner cards bundled with an IR blaster for this purpose. Tuning channels on multiple STB's can get a little tricky. Were you planning on trying to record more than one channel at a time? If so, setting up multiple STB's takes a little more effert and the use of multiple IR blasters.

There are a lot of tuners out there that will work just fine for your application. In your case there would be no special type for IPTV. As long as you can connect the STB to the Tuner card via Svideo, composite, or Coaxial then you're good to go. Realize that you'll need a 1/8"mini jack to RCA cable to plug the sound into the Tuner from the STB if you use Svideo. or composite.

By the way, your STB's don't happen to be RF controlled are they.. I think my friend's are. This could pose a problem that may or may not be able to be remedied using a IR to RF converter.

Go to pvrs.net and ask. With digital TV, there's usually a way to direct stream copy the video/audio stream, avoiding signal degradation over analog (S-Video, in this case) cables and re-encoding.
