First Overclock - NEED HELP!

Thread Starter
Hey, sorry if this isn't the right way to go about it, but I'm just really needing some input on my Overclock - and can't find anything more in any guides or forums....

Anyway, I have my system specs linked, and have overclocked via lowering HT multi from 5X to 4X and raising HyperTransport (FSB) from 200-236 MHZ. Haven't touched CPU Multi - at 11x still Haven't touched memory, so it's now clocked to 430 or so, from 400, haven't touched timings either, I think they're at 5-5-5-18. My HyperTransport Clock is at 944.1 mhz (shouldn't go too far above/below 1000 I've heard). I'm pretty stable, ran Prime95 for an hour before I stopped it.

Here's my problems - with the Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G I can't change settings for Vcore, VDimm, or FSB/Ram Ratio. Basically, only settings I can play with are FSB (hypertransport), HT Multiplier, CPU Multiplier, and Memory timings.

Last piece of info - I DO have an extra gig stick of Supertalent ddr2 800 mhz ram sitting here. I took it out when I got my 2 gigs of Crucial, just cause I thought it'd be easier to mess with everything without two different types of ram...

Any ideas on where I should go from here? Is this basically as high as I should probably go since I can't increase voltage? Should I add that other stick of ram/mess with memory timings at all (I know the crucial can run at 4.4.4.12, but I can't change voltage so... I dunno). I have a zillion fans in my case, and an upgraded processor fan, so my temps are well below normal. Any advice is very appreciated!!

Thanks!
My System

You should be able to change Vcore, Vdimm, it might be under the advanced chipset feature options in Bios. As for FSB/Ram ratio, that changes depending on the frequency you put your ram at and the multiplier you use.

You have 2 X 1 gb of crucials now, installing the extra 1 GB will have 3gb but it wont run in dual channel. Some people like quantity over quality, meaning the more ram the better.
Since your overclocking I would stick to the 2GB kit. It all depends on what you do with your system. You can always try all 3 sticks and benchmark and benchmark with 2 and see what you prefer.
Hope that helps.

Without knowing much more, I feel the same on sticking with memory quality over quantity - figure that probably memory quantity is the last thing that'd be bottlenecking my system anyway right now - and when I can, I'll just buy another cheap set of 2x1gig crucial to make 4X1 the same ram.
Thanks for the reply!! I'm trying hard not to be a newb and clutter up your board with useless posts

As far as being able to change vcore and vdimm, I read a walkthrough for clocking my exact motherboard that listed something like Cons: no settings for vcore, vdimm, etc - and I haven't been able to find anything for those settings on my own either.

So I guess my questions would be back to - what should I do now to get extra performance with my Hypertransport clocked to 230X11=2.6ghz? Is that probably the limit with my particular mobo and processor, or should I try lowering the HT and ramping up the fsb speed more, (hard limit of 300 in bios)? Change my cpu multiplier (can only lower)? mess with my memory speeds and timings? And then lastly, if I were gonna spend some extra $$$, what would be the best thing to replace first, second, etc? (Graphics card, another 2 gigs ram, proc/mobo,

Sorry so many questions - appreciate anyone's help or comments however long or short

Definitely the power supply, then move up from there, since that antec is going to limit your upgrading anyway.

well always write down the the current OC settings and try different ones.
Lower your Cpu Multi and raise the HT more (FSB) and lower your HT Multi so that its = to or around 1000.
Always monitor temps and try different multis & HT's to see what works best.
For instance, a cpu can work with a 235 HT but might not work with a 233 HT etc. Try not to use any half multi's as well.
Hope that helps.

Joshua, what are you doing that requires 4GB of memory? Windows XP 32-bit will only recognize up to 3.25-3.5GB of memory. If your browsing the internet, checking email and playing games then 2GB should be plenty. It sometimes can also be difficult overclocking with 4 DIMMs filled.
In regards to your first post, if your running DDR2 800 memory at 430mhz(30mhz overclock) then that might be your problem. Have you tested your memory in memtest86 to verify that it's stable at that frequency speed? If your running unstable memory then that is probably the reason why your having troubles overclocking your processor. Try running the memory at DDR2-667 or even 533 for now(for testing purposes of course).

Let us know

Good luck

Good suggestion about the memory! Thanks, didn't really think about it that way.... When i run my ram down a notch or two, do i mess with timings or leave them on auto?
