killer post spook...

i was trying to think about what to write in some sort of a written agreement, and you have a really nice starting point above... a few tweaks and its done...

I am at the point where I'm wondering if this freelance computer is worth the hassle. I may just go ahead and offer to just build computers. Transferring data is a maybe, and recommend that they go to a pc shop unless they just don't care, then i might do it..

Up until now everyone i have worked with, which isn't a small number, can somewhat understand what is going on. This lady that i just worked for had no clue what was going on, and i feel was just nodding away when i was talking hoping for some magical out come that i want aware of until after the fact.

I am not sure if i should feel sorry that there was a misunderstanding because she was unaware of what was really going on, even though i did explain it fairly simplistically with analogies, or to just say whatever to the situation because there is no way she will ever understand what just happened...

I do see that for people in the know, what i did was very simple and clear, but trying to relay that to joblo down the street that has no idea how a computer works, is a whole other thing...

Damn, I think I would let it go. Just don't answer her phone calls for a week and if they continue then maybe have the phone company block her phone number.

You should definitly rite up some kind of agreement that the customer has to sign (if you haven't already), saying that they cant sue you for losing a file or something. In this day and age people will sue for anything, I doubt she will though.

Better luck next time though man , customer service type jobs are always a pain. I've worked in everything from a Pharmacy Tech (horrible job, sick people pissed off is never good), to waiter, to retail clothing store clerk, and a few more; and what I have learned from working all those customer service jobs is working with people sucks , there are alota strange/weird angry people.

You sound like a very caring person Jo and it seems that you have done more than enough for this lady. Your not on your own though. I started up a very similar local computer help service in my area and got myself quite a few customers, maily giving lessons to new computer users having problems with mostly basic things, I would still get involved in hardware repair replacement though. Most folk were fine mainly because I'd done exactly what they wanted and it didn't really cost them a lot. However you just have to remember that, you can't please ALL of the people ALL of the time. There are just some who aren't willing to listen, or as others have said just don't understand what your on about, and it's those people who are the first to start complaining when things go wrong as they innevitably will do from time to time.
I actually got fed up in the end and stopped advertising for buisiness because it seemed that the harder I tried to help people, the more they tried to walk all over me and I wasn't having that. Once I left the moaners to their own devices (no pun intended) It wasnt long before my phone started ringing again with those same people asking for help as other places wanted a lot more money than I would have charged. I felt quite happy replying "I'm sorry, I don't do that sort or work anymore as I used to get too much grief off the poeple I was trying to help".
It's not a nice thing to say but I'm glad they're now being charged fully, as It might remind them of how good they used to have it when that computer guy (Me) was pretty good and low priced too.

Sure the lady is computer illiterate, but it is your fault by not making it clear to her. Not that I'm saying you shouldn't have done it, it's just people these days get so worked up over certain things, and you have to learn to take pre-cautions.

Make a contract-like form and make people sign it, explaining them that losing data can happen.

Situations like these are exactly why I do not make computer service my profession, well not to the point I depend on it any way. I'm not any where near as nice of a person as you seem to be, and I would likely be serving a very long prison term if forced to deal with such individuals on anything approaching a regular basis.

Tell the woman not to contact you again, if she does, block her e-mails and tell the phone company to block her number, or report her for harrassment.

A contract that states you are not responsible for data loss is a must.

Outlook Emails can be retrieved, you just have to know where to look,

Hdd:\\docs and settings\\username\\local Settings\\application data\\Identities\\some stupidly long folder name concerning something to do with an experiement that einstien probably made\\microsoft\\Outlook Express\\

there's the Emails Figured out, should be atleast 3 files inside, and hopefully bigger then 10kb.

Sounds like you did your best.

Ive had customers like this before (fortunately their a rarity) and really theres nothing more you can do or say that will 'right' the situation.

As you explained, the computer as it was was stuffed. At least now shes got a PC that works even if she does have to phone a few friends to get their email addresses again.

**** happens, and seriously some people shouldnt be allowed to own a computer. Forget it & move on.
