[Project] Building aluminium case from scratch - Page 28

Thanks for the compliements on the fans!

Painting the rest of the case... i dont think so. I like the aluminium dark pollished finish. Unless you can suggest something to put on it that simple but looks good...

As i mentioned i am going to have to remove the design on the side. I have been thinkin of ideas and this is what i have came up with...

1. Sand the pannel (doesnt matter if some of the paint get scratched).

2. Use tracing paper to trace out the borders of the design on there.

3. Cut out vinyl flilm to the exact shape of the design and stick on over the top.

4. Snap some photos for you guys

Its sparkley and the rest of my case isnt. Depending if it all looks out of place i will have to put this over my trim to it is all the same. I like it because it sparkles

Got a tiny bit more progress to report on. Marked out and drilled the holes for the case feet and attached them. I wasnt sure how stong they are with the adhesive but with the double sided tape and the hole to support they are reasonably sturdy. Havnt got the lights connected yet but i gave them a go just hooking them up to the PSU and there are 6 flash modes with one constantly on and then of course off as well.

Holes dirlled. These were 5/16 snug.

And here are the feet attached. They look bland at the moment but one the LED's get going it loogs super sweet!

I still reckon you should have gotten casters and a cheap 2x15 cathode set.
That way it'd be sturdier (and movable), + you could a sound activated module and have them flash to your music too.

Still, you made your choice and you obviously liked it so kudos nonetheless!

a sound activated module would be sweet.

Quick question:
The fan has 3 wires.

Black = ground
Red = ?
Yellow = ?

Which colour is the 5V and 12V?

not sure which fan you mean (a pic of it and the connector would help) but red should be the 12v+ and yellow (normally blue) should be the rpm sensor on a standard 3 pin mobo header. Need to see the connector

Nailed it.
You only get the +5v through a molex, not a fan header.
E.g. For my Molex to 6x 3-pin. The +12v line powers the connectors (For fans), the +5v line powers the LED's for fan status on the module.
The LED's in a fan don't have a +5v line to go off, so they'd just use resistors off the +12v line.

Molex:
Red - +12v
Yellow - +5v
Black (x2) - Ground

3-Pin Fan:
Red - +12v
Yellow - RPM sensor
Black - Ground

and btw, smokie, in your switch batter test, you could have omitted the blacks connected to the switch, connect them to each other is the same thing. in your scenario your wasting the second circuit that could be used for something else

Thankyou all for helping. I was a bit confused because the yellow wires on my PSU are 12V. I just fiddled around with it for a bit and realised that it was the red wire was the 12V. Nothing happened when i used the yellow cable. I thought it might have been a 5V or something but thankyou both for clearing that up. I have done two fans so far, got another 6 to go

Hold on CR. Got them all finished now. Took me 3 1/2 hours to finish plus the time it took to do the two last night.

This is my mighty work bench

Here is the one of the switches with the fan wires soldered onto it.

And finally all 6 fans soldered. Im glad that is over!

Next job on the list is to mark and drill the holes for the fans.

Back with more pics of that later... Hopefully...
