Add a HD for a RAID 0 or Get a Raptor instead?

As of now I have a Samsung HD501LJ.

I'm not too sure if i should get another one and set it up as a RAID 0 or get a 150GB Raptor to use as my primary OS drive and the 500gb samsung as my data/video drive.

Space isn't an issue at all. At this point it's just about performance and staying under my $150 budget for the drive.

Side note, my samsung has 17.6 ms seek times.

What's up with that?!

Raptor!!!!!!!!! 10k RPM FTW

seriously though, don't even think twice about 10k rpm.. especially since you said space is not an issue, put your OS on it and you're good to go

Do you know what the main advantages the Raptor would have over the RAID 0 set up of the samsungs? I know that they have faster seek times...but what does that actually equal to in performance? The Raid0 will have higher read/writes, correct?

Off topic: Where in North Carolina do you live? I'm moving to Charlotte from L.A. in 2 weeks!

but what happens is that even though the RAID 0 array can transfer data faster, the raptor with its higher seek time can FIND what you need faster. Most of the time, the OS isn't looking to transfer these huge files, its trying to find and transfer these small <1MB files to the ram. Because the raptors can find the files faster, the number of files the raptor can transfer to the ram is greater than the number of files the RAID 0 array, yielding faster load times and hence, performance.

68 Pin SCSI is out of style, my man!

80 Pin, Hot Swap FTW!

Raptors are super fast, but you'll pay for it with your ears. I had two raptor 74GB drives in RAID0, and I finally took them out and went back to a seagate barracuda 7200.10 drive. It's nearly as fast, and significantly easier on my ears. Unless you're benchmarking, or using it for a transactional database server, raptors are a bit overkill (but still cool).
