Need help Installing "Stuff" In Ubuntu

Thread Starter
HI, I have been running Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop for a while now and I have yet to install anything other than an Adobe flash player for youtube videos. I take it that installing apps in this OS is a little harder than just downloading an installer and running it, like in XP/Vista.

I have been trying to install a program called "wine" to run windows based software on my PC. Thus far I have yet to successfully install it. I went to this site here:

http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

I have already used the terminal to add the APT key and I think I did it right (or maybe not).

I then moved on to the second part if the instructions in which I tried to add :

sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...t.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

I tried to add it to the “software sources†in the “third party software†section. But when I enter the text after clicking “Add†I cannot click on the “Add Source†bottom to add it. And I leaves me with just the cancel option. So how Do I do about adding this software?

Is there any easier way to install wine? Like a simple download and install type thing?

System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

Search "wine"

Given that 99% of the software you use is open source, they can be collected and distributed from a few central servers. You can then use a single program (apt for ubuntu) to install pretty much everything. It is much easier to install on linux than on windows. It's just different, so you just have to learn how to do it

This needs to be stickied... There are lots of things that need to be sticiked. On the list should be:

1. "What distro should I use?"
2. How to install graphic drivers (Envy, dammit, use Envy!)
3. How do I install a program?

The first two command lines fron the Wine website are supposed to be entered in terminal. After you run both the command lines open Synaptic and search for Wine, you will get a few hits but you'll see it in there. Check it and say ok to adding the other packages and click Apply. After it's done you will find Wine in your program menu.

If you can't find it in the package manager, try "sudo apt-get install wine" without the quotes. Make sure to run "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" before you go and install any programs.
