As an undergraduate with a Finance major, I don't understand why they are paid so much. Essentially 80% of the students in my classes feel the same (the topic has come up several times). I don't see what argument you could put forward that would convince me. Market supply and demand? I don't see how these VP's could be so talented that they require salaries of $300k to $1M...

Then again I'm surely going to be bashed by those who disagree but I don't see subjectivity in this. Paid well - sure. Paid excessively - no.

Why are athletes and movie stars payed so much? It's all about the value society places on the position. These executives are hired to run huge corporations and to make sure they keep turning out profits, and in today's corporate driven world, people are willing to pay up so that their investments are kept safe.

I think it's the value they place on the people. Then people like the ex-Twins pitcher Johan Santana say "I deserve more money because other players who are as good as I am are making more." It makes me sick. I wish I could meet people like that and say "oh get over yourself. You make me sick!"

Their investments are being kept safe. I will disagree by simply pointing at AMD's stock and the rest if self-explanatory.

I will also disagree because there have been several studies conducted and empirical evidence clearly demonstrates that there is little to no correlation between an executive's salary and company performance.

Athletes and stars (most of the entertainment industry) is overpaid also in my opinion. A lot of actors/singers seem only popular because of physical beauty rather than for talent and skill.

Athletes should be making a lot (low supply of the best-of-the-best while having a high demand; many teams) however I don't see why they should be making so much. Simply by lowering salary caps this could be solved. Why should a hockey player make $120 million over 10 years. Why should a football player make $11 million / year? Brady makes a lot less than Umenyiora. Does that make sense?

I would argue Brady has won 3 (almost 4) Super Bowls and is the heart of the team. He chooses to take a lower salary however, and that should make you wonder why he would do that. When even a player admits they are overpaid (overall)... That should send a signal.

I fail to see how most executives add enough value to the company to warrant those excessive 6 or 7-figure salaries.

i can understand why a football player is paid a nice wage because they are putting physical strain on their body. Getting hit like that, and constantly getting hurt is not natural for humans to encounter the football players go through. As for why CEO's make a lot of money, that can only be determined on what they do.

people like tiger woods i cant fathom why they make much money. they are hardly moving and they are playing something that is fun and not life threating.

Like the guy who owns best buy, i don't even know his name and i work for them. i think its Brian Dunn. He does take the time out of his day to make appearances in whats we call Tag TV. Its a little 10-15 show that best buy makes to give the employees updates on future company events, such as the introduction of dell computers, new products, special demands and what not at our supposedly monthly meetings. Plus he does show up on there for about a minute to talk about company changes. So at least he makes himself know to his employees thats more then what i can say for most CEOs.

Sure he shouldnt probably be getting paid a Mil plus from what I've seen going on in the company but at least we actually know the guy.

Sorry gex80 I have to disagree

Over here our footballers (proper football ) earn vast amounts of money and for what?? A few hours training each week, then a game or two during the same week.

You'll hear pundits saying 'Its a short career', well what happened to getting another job after football !!?? Everyone else has to when there career ends at 35.

It's the little people that make CEO's look good, they dont do the front line stuff which makes the company money or deals with the customer (make things, answer calls etc)

Too true, the people up there work way beyond the 9 to 5.

AMD Chief Executive and Chairman Hector Ruiz collected compensation valued at $7.4 million in 2007, down 54.3 percent from the year before.
I'm union I get paid pretty well and there are people that say I get paid to much, and I work really hard for it. Anyhow why would I be jealous nothing I can do would change it, more power to him thing that gets me is the average guy working at AMD don't get crap, and it's not his fault the company isn't doing good.

And how can you compare movie stars to CEO’s it’s a whole different ball game.

I worked at a company years back the CEO was getting around a million a year, I was a truck driver and we only got a bonus if the company sold 5 million a month which I was happy with I got good bonuses anyhow the company was selling over 5 million a month but started losing money so after a few months of this they took our bonus away anyhow the head guys in the office still got them, funny thing is it was there fault we were losing money two years later the CEO gets let go but it was to late and the company went under and everyone lost their jobs.

Which echoes my point, its the 'little' guy (and gal) doing all the leg work that gets the CEO's there bonuses
