Yeah, same old question again.

I'm building a new computer in May/June for my apartment I am moving out this summer. I want my computer to last about 2 years before I need to do any upgrades or anything since money will be a little tight when I'm moved out.

With that in mind which one would be the better long term investment? I know the 8800GT performs slightly better but the 9600GT runs a little cooler and may get better with future drivers. I've heard about some kind of issue with some of the 9600GTs just going to a black screen randomly too which is putting me off of them a little.

I don't have to play my games on the highest settings but of course I would like too. I just want a card that can play new games on at least medium settings and continue to do so for the next 2 or so years.

Thanks for the advice!

Within 2yrs timeframe, many new GPU will be out. Both 8800GT and 9600GT should be fine for next 2 yrs but I still pick 8800GT over 9600GT. Let's see what others say.

Yea I agree with linskingdom... Though with AMD's RV770 and Nvidia's G200 on the horizon(July) you may wish to consider waiting. Really it's hard to go wrong with either.
