Well, I have to say I am watching this verry closely, because I have a 9600gt (love this card) and I cam from a 7600gs. Well, My wife needs a better card now too, she has a 7600gs, And I was going to order 2 more cards, because I want to Sli and she needs a card and she can only have one because of MB. I have been torn between going sli 9600gt, 8800gts or 9800gtx. I am OCing this one to a good love get a 13k 3d06 mark etc. But with me orderiing 2 cards I could give her this card and get 2 others but my buget will only hand up to 2 9800 gtx's (about $650+, maybe a let more). just not sure about cards, was thinking of just getting a second 9600gt and waiting until new gen cards come out. So I am watching this thread close.

Almost went up 1000 on 3dmark06 by just OC'ing the G92 to 770/1900/1050.. and temps stayed around 54ish with 60% fan. Crysis runs everything on high with no lag what so ever. I love this card

Not to go against the grain, but I am quite happy with my 9600gt. Got it during a $40 MIR from newegg which made final cost $110...
Getting over 10K on 3dmark06, playing Crysis @1400X900 on high with FPS in the 30s. Runs cool and clean, OCed great. Never had an artifact or BlackSOD since I got it. No complaints here, but I have never owned an 8800gt either, so I cannot comment too much. From what I have seen, the minimal performance gains boasted by the 8800gt's was not worth the extra $50-75 I would have paid for one. My vote goes to the 9600gt because of the "bang for your buck" mentality. I think down the road I will pick up a new mobo and try SLI. They say these things scale very well too.
Just my opinion... ...and remember my opinion and 98 cents will get you a cup of coffee at McDonalds and nothing more!

i believe the 7800gt is faster.. But i'm not sure.. used to have one though.. traded it for my 7950gt lol

I'm in a somewhat similar situation trying to decide between the same two GPU's. My only confusion comes in with the names of these things. Wouldn't it make perfect sense for the higher model number to be the better product? Why would they do that to us? It's entirely too confusing. But also according to the tech specs on newegg and tigerdirect, the 97600GT has a higher core clock as well as shader clock, etc. I'm still a noob and all, but that just doesn't make sense to me. But I'm reading on this thread and I believe everyone, but according to everyone that's used the 8800GT, it's better than the 8800GT. So I guess that's which one I'll go for. yet another big purchase I'll have to convince the wife of, lol. Then again later when I'm ready to SLI it. Oh well.

The 8600GT was on par with the 7900GT.Both ran pretty neck in neck and both were faster than the 7800GT.

on topic. The 8800GT helped push my old 939 rig to 11k in 3D Mark06 and plays Crysis just fine. With some good 3rd party cooling, it's a decent OC'er. Just my opinion.
