Trying to overclock my Q6600 (help please) - Page 5

The reason I'm trying to manually OC now is becasue I have been reading stories of how AI overclocking sucks in the long run. The last 2 days my computer has been taking forever to post and then i read this from a Mod at the Asus forumns

Hard to know exactly why that happens but I expect that it is a BIOS issue. For whatever reason, the BIOS can not set up hardware the way you want it so it defaults to some stable setting. If this behaviour begins to happen more frequently, you might want to get your system set back to stock speed... it could be an indication of an impending CPU problem.
Stock settings run okay with the proper ram voltage settings (it undervolts at stock). I never flashed a bios but I've read how to do it. Is there any pointers you can give me when I do this flash. What should I look out for? It says everything should be stock when you flash but what if stock means wrong settings for my ram? should I disregard that and volt it to the correct settings?

Reset BIOS with jumper on mother board. Check manual for location and method. These BIOS are prone to not reseting to default any other way. After unzipping the BIOS, put the 1203.bin file on a flash drive. With the flash drive in the usb port, start up and press delete to enter setup. Go to tools and use flash tool. Just follow instructions. Caution! A BIOS flash failure can cause the system to not boot again. Make sure you are ready for this by whatever reading you need.

flash is done sweet

edit: I'm going to begin tweaking starting by modestly adjusting voltage settings for my vcore, Nb , and disabling all that stuff the guide says. Here we go

Note:if you clock your ram or fsb to high your system will freeze up. Sometimes when this happens, and you try to reboot, your system will freeze before you can enter the BIOS.
If this happens, reset the BIOS with the jumper on the mother board.Your system will then
reboot in default.

Hmm should I flash my bios to 1203 as well? I'm already at 1.81GHz and was thinking about popping it up to 3GHz as well. Besides, I hear that's the highest my motherboard will allow But after seeing Warmech's sig and seeing that he's actually at 3.22GHz, I'm sort of excited

On another note, I raised my OCZ to it's stock memory speed, @ 1066MHz. Everything is running smooth. Should I leave the timings at default? Also, I have it unlinked right now.
CPU-Z is still giving me wrong "Max Bandwidth" under the SPD tab, showing that I have a PC2-5300 instead of PC2-8500. But under EPP#1 it does show 533Mhz (DDR is freq x2, 533x2=1066) so I guess it's OK? Under memory though, it says my DRAM frequency is 521 and keeps switching from 520 to 521.. lol

Anyway, hopefully I can flash the BIOS correctly

remember to take it out of the zip file. I'm at 2.6 with 1.35 volt... my ram is in sync mode right now. On everest it comes it tells me its running 1:1 but the speed is really low...295mhz right now. I think I need new ram ?

RAM is important when it comes to OC'ing.

If you check a few pages back, you'll see the ones that were recommended. They're affordable and do a great job.

The OCZ Platinum PC2-8500 1066MHz ones I got are awesome so far. They looked so sexy I didn't even want to install them LOL

So when I take it out of the zip, I move it to my flash drive? then boot up?

Here's my RAM:

Yeah its pretty simple actually. As for my ram I think 1066mhz ram is a must, I'am at 2.8 and my ram is at 3:2 ratio but its already being overclocked from its standard speed by 26mhz. I'm going to stick with this setup for now until I get some new pieces of ram. Let me know how your OC goes.
