Im taking them back!!!

Thread Starter
i bought 2 EVGA 9800 GX2s and tried Quad SLI. with the crysis benchmark my best average was 41fps!!!!...i ran one card and got 41fps but in game the 2 cards where unplayable when ever the action got intense id drop to like 12fps

i can only play the game with one card even then its only 25-35 fps...ive played with these suckers for a week now and still no luck...i just wanna play crysis on High @ 1680x1050 with no shutter or loss of fps......question is what card or cards should i get instead always had luck with 8800 in the past never tried em on crysis though...

8800GTX are a solid card. And work well in SLI. Or even the GT's in SLI

The HD3870X2 is also a very good card if you want a single card solution.

Yes, unfortunately the 9800GX2 suck in SLI

So on high settings on the benchmark you got an average of 41 fps at 1680x1050? That seems really low for even a single GTS 512 let alone one GX2 or even 2 GX2s. I have seen very good results on these cards with crysis. I think you should let some people that are more familiar with the GX2s try and help you out before you return those cards.

Just imo.

Edit: What kind of 3dmark are you pulling with those?

They fail at scaling. 3870x2 CrossfireX is a proven performer netting on average about a 40% increase in performance.

Gotta remember these cards are a *very* new technology, let alone running them in SLI, and it seems entirely possible that the problem you describe is somehow driver related, and scaling with quad-sli might eventually improve dramatically. That being said, it's an expensive bet to be making if it's wrong, and probably not one I'd personally make.

Also, I don't personally like the idea of having four G92 cores working with (effectively) only 512MB of vram capacity betwixt them. I don't think that is 'the problem' in this particular case, but I could see it being very limiting for people somewhere down the road.

I think the GX2 only makes real sense if you *don't* have an SLI motherboard, so it's the only way you can effectively 'get' sli performance in your rig. If you do have a SLI board, I'd say 8800GTS or 9800GTS make the most sense, as things now stand anyway.

Also, in Crysis, are you talking the benchmark, or are you talking in-game? And what (if any) AA level are you testing this with? I'd be inclined to suggest you fire up the Rivatuner graphs, and try to find out how much VRAM is getting used while running the bench/game at the settings you're using. And try checking to see what happens if you drop texture sizes by a notch. If your frames go up significantly, it's almost certainly a memory related issue.
