Lapping a TRUE???

Thread Starter
Alright guys, I just got my new Thermalright Ultra Extreme in the mail. I'm real excited to install it in my system but I'm kinda wondering whether I should do some lapping. I've never done it before, but I did a check, and I can tell the surface of the heatsink isn't totally flat. This is probably real normal I'm guessing. What should I do? I'm kinda nervous about lapping... I need a confidence boost! or some advice

Go for it. It's not too hard, just a little time consuming. Here are some guides with pics.

Why don't you try it without lapping first and check your temps. That way if you want to lap later on you can say to other people, 'I got an Xc decrease becuase I lapped', its worth/not worth doing etc.

When I first got mine, I thought the fine ridges on the bottom were a defect whereas in fact I told its meant to be like that to aid in the spread of TIM once you start screwing it down.

If you do a 'before and after', post your temps (with ambient) so we can see the difference.

yeah I've got the TRUE lapped, but my IHS is uneven, and I see little to no improvements over the Tuniq. I must lap the CPU now!

EDIT: and just FYI, the TRUE is uneven by design

oh ic. Alright, thanks for all the help. Sorry I didn't write back sooner, I first posted and didn't see any responses for a while,... then I decided to check back later and was happy to see some feedback. I'll test it out and let you know how all goes. Hopefully in the next day or two(seeing as tomorrow I gotta make sure I get my taxes turned in first )
