WC for the long haul???

Thread Starter
As I plan my new case mod, and system I'm hit with if I want to air cool again like my current rig in my sig, or go wc'ing.

My PC's mostly stay on 24/7 365, is this recommended for a WC'ed rig? How long do the pumps last? Do you have general failing of seals\ubes over a course of time?? I mean I know fan's will eventually wear out, but since your dealing with some pressures etc with WC'ing do the components wear out faster?

Who has had a pump go out and does it immediately spell disaster? Are the pressures generated by the pump enought to possibly in time blow a tube off a fitting?

Anyone who has been doing WC'ing for a LONG time please help me out here...LOL

Pumps generally last a long time. A quality pump should last quite a while. Tubing doesn't generally just fail. There was one case where somebody had tubing contact something hot(forget what it was), which caused the tubing to burst. However, this isn't common and tubing/seals should be good for a long time. Fans on a radiator shouldn't die quicker (especially if you have a shroud I would imagine). And if a pump goes out, it will mean temps increasing drastically. However, there are measures that can be put in place to shut down if it happens. Most BIOS' have options to shut down if the cpu reaches a certain temp. Sorry for the long post and I hope it helped.

I've had my loop more or less intact for about 5 months. running 24/7 most of the time.

Pumps take a long time to fail, but sometimes they can go out early. Generally, the tubing and seals should be good for years.

*However, it is recommended to change out the fluid every 6 months or so.*

yeah, I could see that as a part of a maintence schedule, so....what is the WC'ing fluid made of?...I've heard it's like antifreeze that's in your car, I've heard it's nothing but destilled water.....I've heard other things that I won't mention here also....LOL

There are tons of things you can use as coolant. They have pre-made. I recommend distilled water with additives. However, I don't exactly know what additives are recommended, so I'll hand that off to a wc guru.

Distilled water + PT Nuke + 10% Pentosin G11 + drop of dish soap + 1:40 Ratio of Glycerin is pretty close to "ideal"

Watercooling will have you all set maintenance free for at least half a year at which you should top it up or preferably drain/refill. You should maintain it several times a year, but twice a year is doable.

WOW dr4gon I don't know what some of that stuff is.....you must be a chemist..LOL...

Yeah, I've got myself on a monthly schedule with my air cooled machines right now, and I will probably keep that type of a schedule with the WC'ed one just do the draining etc every 3 months or so maybe...I dunno....

If someone knows of a really good faq about maintence on WC'ed rigs please post it!...

Thanks again!!

Pumps have a general MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) of several thousand hours. My pump has a MTBF of 50,000 hours. That's a little more than 2000 days of constant running. Granted it varies from pump to pump but I doubt you will have to worry about one dying if nothing is wrong with it. Coolant varies from person to person. I am against pre mixed stuff because it can cause temps to be slightly higher etc. ATM I am running straight distilled water and I haven't had any issues. My PC sees no UV light though so that could be a reason. Dr4gon said it best really.

No the credit to that chemistry goes to ira-k

People say 3-4 times a year. I do twice a year , but when it looks dirty, it's definitely time!

Thanks for the rep.
