How do you tell if the GPU is Stable?

Thread Starter
I have an 8800GT and i'm about to overclock it but i was just wondering how you can tell if it is stable or not?

I've tried ATI tools but i get an error saying that "Kernal Mode Driver does not seem to be running" so i don't know if it works or not.

Any ideas of another GPU Stability test or how to fix ATI tools?

just run atitools and run the "test for artifacts" you should see the temp rise and you should be able to test for stableness. thats even if you get the error

There is also an application called FurMark that will put some very heavy stress on the GPU and if you don't get any artifacts or BSOD then your card is stable.

You are going to be approaching your limits for clock speed with your current voltage at temps any higher than that. Some get lucky and can bench ~730-750mhz on stock..but not for 24/7 use.

*I use back to back runs on 3d06, as the HD tests tend to stress the GPU's really hard, as they include most all of the memory bandwidth, with extra colors and textures...temps on HD tests are higher for me than on any other 3d benchmark..other than a GPU f@h client..which will mainly test core stability.

^same. I use two screens (crts =P), run Rivtunner hardware monitor, Realtemp, Coretemp and Cpuz on one screen, and 3dmark06 on a loop on the other, then watch tv and every 5 minuets or so I check the temps, if they start to get to high I look more often, just to check
Oh, hai.

To test stability I would do the 15 mins of ATItool artifact scanning as suggested. For mem, core and shader I would overclock one at a time and stress just that one for 15 mins. Then stress just one other for 15 mins while having the other two settings on stock. Do this until all three are stressed without errors/artifacts/yellow-green-spots and then try all 3 together overclocked. Also ensure that your fan is set to a higher rate in rivatuner while running these tests.

ATItool 0.27 beta 3 should work if you're not using it already.

ATITool doesn't stress a GPU that much, I can run hours of ATITool testing on unstable GPU overclocks.
3DMark06 HD tests should work
I just bump the GPU up bit by bit (read: very tiny steps) while playing games, at least the testing isn't a waste of time then
I'll try that FurMark when I get home tonight, seems a nice tool.
