is my usb thumbdrive dying?

Thread Starter
so for about the past month whenever i try to use my usb flashdrive in my computer i get this:

and i also get this error on another computer of mine (both running xp sp2, using different ports every time),

now heres where it gets weird, when i plug this into my vista laptop, it usually works perfectly, only sometimes will i get this error, and after plugging it into my vista laptop if i put it in any of my computers it will work on them like normal for a few days.

whats going on?

its a nice corsair voyager that ive had about 6 months, and i always used the usb cable, so the connector shouldn't be going bad? (i know these usually dont last very long, but i take extra precautions to try to extend its lifetime)

any ideas?

Use HD Tune and check for errors.

It could be dying, like Dukie said run HDtune. Try formatting it, the file system may be corrupt.

You probably pulled the drive out while it was writing, that can sometimes kill it...most people forget about the safe remove thing.

I agree with Ducky - If it's got errors, send it back to the manufacturer, as it's most likely covered by a 1yr. warranty.

Also - try reformatting it. Vista can format thumbdrives as NTFS or FAT32, but XP will only format as FAT32. (I know this sounds crazy, before everyone starts jumping on me, lol) but I have personally witnessed similar issues when a thumb drive was formatted w/ NTFS on Vista, and then later used on a laptop with XP Pro. This only happened on one laptop I ever used it on (a Dell E1505), but it was reproducible.

It's silly, but if it works it works. You may want to give it a try.
