I would say that the 8800GTS should be capable of running any game maxed out for the next year or so at a resolution of 1600*1200 or less so it would be an excellent upgrade.
A single Ultra is still the best card for Crysis for a Non SLI setup.

This review may be somewhat dated(12/07) but it does pit 8800gts(G92) vs 8800ultra...

Attachment 70741

I'm fairly certain the 8800gts can OC better(core/shader), so really unless you use greater than 1900x1200 resolution + AA I think the 8800gts is the better choice.

I own an Ultra and 2 8800GTS G92's. My Ultra has murdered 1 GTS in Everquest2, Crysis, and Company of Heroes. Though that's all at stock speeds. I'm not comfy overclocking a GPU. Though from what I've read an Ultra can take a lot more heat then the GTS.

Now 2 GTS G92's in SLI (brothers machine) rules the roost.

Just ordered the eVGA 9800GTX. It will clock better than the GTS for sure.

And here's a ton of reviews on the 9800GTX http://www.gpureview.com/reviews.php

The 9800 will indeed clock higher, but is the premium worth it? Well, that's up to you. I'd get the GTS.

people people people! now is NOT the time to be buying graphics cards! at least wait until RV770 and GT200 come out, because when they do anything that's out now will both drop in price and become heavily overshadowed. by the way they come out june/july I beleive so it's not like its a huge wait. don't throw your money down the toilet.

A single ultra will also cost you an arm and a leg and I don't think the OP wants to waste money on one.

EDIT: The 9800GTX might clock higher but than again, it might not. The 8800GTS does more per clock cycle due to its tighter memory timings so you might want to keep that in mind too when looking at overclocking results.

The GTS varies depending on the e-tailer in Canada. Runs anywhere from 290 - 350 + online.

Whereas the 9800GTX I just bought cost 299.00 + 9.99 Air shipping. Stellar deal. Excellent Price Point..

Not to mention, the 9800GTX will definitely overclock better, run cooler, with much less power consumption; read any review on the 9800GTX, you'll see. Just read the reviews I posted ^^

That's why I got the eVGA; for the step-up program. Either get the GX2 in 90 days or If the 9900XXX comes out in June, I'm golden. The GTX is a better card, don't be mistaken. And for 10 bucks more (see above) I'm getting a better overclocker.
