new processor advice

Thread Starter
hey guys
next month I will be upgrading my ol' trusty E6320, I'm thinking of getting the Q450 as its penryn and I've heard its half decent. Has anyone got an opinion on this? And will the Q450 overclock well on my maximus formula x38 chipset mb? I definately want quad core and its gotta be under around £250,00 GBP but I can stretch if the upgrade is really worth the extra cash, I just want the games flowing nicer and the burning quicker, any advice is appreciated,

Thanks

lauvan

on benchmarks, the Dual-core E8400 is better than the new 1333 fsb Q9300. Both in stock and overclocked mode.

E8400 > Q9300 > Q6600

However the Q6600 can handle more overclock than the Q9300.

ah I would have thought the quad would score better with the cache and four cores difference etc, can you link these reults at all? Would be interesting to see where and how they differ? I want better 3d gaming
performance than my e6320 so thought again quad would be better?

For gaming at the moment the 8400 is better than quads. So for current gaming the 8400 is best but for futre proofing a quad would be better.

I would go for a e8400 as when the new games come out we will have nehalem and octo cores

after doing some research ive heard form numerous forums that the 45nm dual cores arnt very voltage friendly. some poor sod's E8400 died after 3 months of running his cpu at 1.45 vcore on air cooling. But that's only one guy but enought to put me off them for a while.

the thing about benchmarking is that if you use pcmark06 it can be very generic with the results and the way that it works the best thing is to get people to post multiple results on multiple different games then asses the use of hardware using some fotware that analysis system performace in the back ground.

The Q9300 really isn't that good. Your best bet if your not doing alot of applications and mostly gaming would be E8400 or better yet e8500. If you want a good quad I'd get atleast a Q9450..Q9550 is really an awesome processor without the "extreme" price tag.

ah il try get a little research done, seems theres more too it lol, if anyone has any link for performance an overclocking benchmarks of the penryns that would be great. I'm kinda swinging towards the Q9450 as the price and everything seems good.
