External USB Drive vs. NAS ? What's the Difference?? - Page 2

Wow,

Thanks for all the replies guys, Definitely clears things up some. Not sure who mentioned it, but I've read a lot of the same stories about consumer NAS devices being problematic...

That being said, I definitely want some redundancy. Last thing I want to do is spend the next month of free time ripping and converting dvd's to avi's 3 hours at a time to have my hard drive fail and lose 100+ avi's and thousands of mp3's. But at the same time, I don't wanna spend any more than $250 $300 max, and everything has to ultimately be able to be shared through WMP11 on my PC so 360 can read it (WMP11 can pull from both personal and network folders though)

So I guess that leaves me with two options if I want to clear my computers HD from any trace of media material, while retaining redundancy:

1 - Buy an NAS device that supports RAID, and hope that it all ends up working with the finnicky 360

2 - buy two equally sized external hard drives, and setup a backup program between them (or 1 external and 1 backup internal, or really, for that matter, 2 internals I guess)

EDIT: Thinking about the comment before about how the drawback to an External Drive is that the computer has to be running for 360 to access.... but I'm wondering if there's any way around that even with an NAS - since the 360 requires windows media connect running in order to pull files

I used to use a Thecus NAS for a while. It was generally slow when it came to moving files around, but streaming them to the PS3 worked fine. It ran a media server so getting it synched up to the console was easy. I've since moved onto an external drive, because USB is just a lot faster.
