Upgrade? Decent Q6600 build

post #1 of 7

I was wondering what I should upgrade. I will be doing this once I am done exams and have around 200-400 dollars to spend.

One thing I am for sure doing is lapping my CPU and heatsink.

Two things I am looking at are getting 4 more GB of ram and a bigger/faster hard drive. I also could use more video power, but I am not hugely concerned with gaming.

I don't know that 4 more GB of memory is really going to do a lot for you. I run 4x1GB on Vista 64 and it has yet to utilize it all which is pretty good considering I do some big Photoshop workflows from time to time.

You could always add a soundcard and some decent 2.1's like Logitech Z-2300's or Klipsch Pro-Medias. That was my last upgrade and I really like the results compared to onboard sound.

Bigger hardrive for you = 750-1000MB
Faster = Raptor X

HDD's are not my area of expertise but is the Raptor really THAT much faster? I have one and the system is fast but that thing is L-O-U-D compared to the two Caviars that keep it company.

I do max out my ram doing audio analysis of large recordings for school and I have done so in photoshop as well. Plus, with vista x64, it would be just that much better for program snappiness.

I would probably go with a 1000GB spinpoint F1 or a WD640gb. Raptors are too noisy for me. My computer is quieter than the static of my speakers.
