A horribly miscalculated metaphor.

Nietzsche obviously was not literal when he said "God is dead", any half-baked, self-proclaimed "philosopher" knows that.

Refers to the fall of man and the rise of the Ubermensch, or "god men", hence man begins to negate the idea of God, and Nietzsche sees this as an empirical eventuality (that is essentially now fact).

He wasn't making a moral judgment based on his society, he was speaking of society tasting the fruits of their "murder," and of their newfound societal and "religious" evolution. In many ways, his theory of metaphysical evolution is homologous to Marx's theory of economic revolution/evolution.

In many ways, Nietzsche's existentialist message pangs in one's heart of hearts deeper than any other. Yet, I continue to ask myself how I continue to be Catholic.

If you must know why I can still remain religious, read "The Brothers Karamazov." or "The Power and the Glory"
Yes! YES!!! Now we're getting somewhere!

Three things:

1.) Caesar had the power to tax, yes, but a tax is essentially a cut of profits. What I'm saying is that the power of governance in literal tax, taking a cut, has passed from governments per se to corporations. This is true specifically with Wal-Mart because (hang with me!) they are using demand-driven volume sales to coerce pricing in global markets. Basically, Wal-Mart makes the rules in the global economy more than governments do, which is a BIG DEAL. They do this by maintaining a huge inventory of prices and sales with those little walmart guns the associates carry; all those guns feed into the main database, and walmart uses that data to strong-arm Chinese manufacturers for tenths of a cent per item. They also use that data to convince both the Chinese and American governments to lessen certain trade tariffs by demonstrating a hair less or more of certain import/export limits. This ceases to be Laissez-Faire; Walmart is not laissing it faire as it pleases, which is what is required. Again, the 'tax' may not be literal in a modern sense, but it is in the deeper linguistic sense. I'm not using a metaphor, it's a sociology of political economics reality.

2.) You are indeed talking of the secular transition made possible with the new empiricism, what Marx referred to as the 'roast partridges of science which fly into our mouths' in the German Ideology. Marx describes the four major transitions of historical materialism: Roman Cosmopolitanism, Feudal Domain, and Capitalism/Secular Empiricism (the Communist Revolution being the fourth). I suppose it's not moral if you say so, but Nietsczhe's context certainly was the "fruit of murder" made possible with industrial capitalism and its justification of cruelty by reverting to the slave morality of Judeo-Christianity. Also, Ubermensch (literally, OverMan, or SuperMan, so I've read) was free from the slave morality (he points out that in German, 'schulde' means guilt, while 'schulden', the plural, means debts). This was neither good nor bad, it just was, but Nietzsche was in favor it, again, from what I've read and discussed.

3.) Now, the Brothers Karamazov, no mistake you're a fan since it's in response to exactly the same industrial capitalist/secular turn as a time period that Marx and Nietzsche were concerned with. But one sees in its themes that it addresses the very ambiguity that is introduced by the presence of ubermensches and their posses, and the fact they are not struck down.

Have you read The Stranger too? I'll check out 'The Power and the Glory'
