Cpu help

Thread Starter
i'm just trying to learn more about computers and cpu/overclock so i have a few questions for you guys that know the answer.

1)where does the cpu get its volt/amps from? (12vrail,3v rail?,etc)

2)what do you guys mean by needing good ram to overclock cpu?

3)when overclocking cpu and using a really good aftermarket cooler (load =less then 50) will your cpu life still shorten due to the fact of high vcore usage.

1) Mainboard determines this out of the 24 pin connector; I believe it has dedicated voltage regulators and filters for delivering the power. Obviously the higher quality PSU the better.

2) When you OC the CPU, usually do so by increasing the Front Side Bus, which the memory clock also depends on. Usually, when increasing the FSB, you increase the memory clock, so the memory has to be able to keep up, thus higher quality, faster RAM you can overvolt is better. Using a memory divider in BIOS can offset this, but some diehards love their 1:1 clock ratios...

3) Higher voltage is a concern yes, but for any given CPU there's a volt threshold that members here will tell you is "safe". In my case, the Vcore of my q6600 should NEVER be over 1.5, or I can expect a shortened life span. Members her can tell you how to OC and EASILY squeeze five years out of your chip.
