IMO if you can overclock then get the 4000+ cpu and the 8600GTS, but im not sure what that board is like for overclocking so if you have little experience with iverclocking get the 8600GT and 5000+, also what CPU cooler are you going to use?

Good call on your spec above
Plus a power supply and its looking like more than $400, cheapo 400 watt won't do the job for that spec. Really need a bit more on the budget or corners do have to be cut. The system above should give you a much better gaming experience than your original spec, its whether or not you can get the extra cash together.

With the stock cooler I overclocked an additional 26% by raising the GPU from 580 MHz to 731, shaders 1450 MHz to 1827, and the memory 1400 MHz to 1960MHz, a 40% overclock. A serious overclocker, this videocard may be on par with a 9600 GT and close to 8800 GT graphics, non-overclocked of course. A significant upgrade from my BFG 7900 GS OC.

At 1280 x 1084 , Crysis Texture/Shadows/Physics/Shadows/Watergives on High: Everything Else Medium gives me very playable frame rates an avg FPS 25.

Also with COD4 at 1600 x 1200 all max settings I get an avg 40+fps
And with Supreme Commander at 1600 x 1200 all max settings - 35+fps
At 1024 x 768 you will get avg FPS 35 with max settings in Crysis.
450W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 30A or more.

That's my problem, I have a 400W with 14A on the +12V1 and 15A on the +12V2. I think that's good enough to run a X2 4200+ BB, 2GB RAM, and 8600GTS 256MB without a problem, but do you think I can OC the CPU to 2.6Ghz? I should I downgrade to the 8600GT 512MB and keep the X2 4200+ BB?

I used to have 2 8600gt in sli... and it sucked, had one 8800gt and it completely walked over my 8600gt sli setup, now got 2 8800gt in sli, plays crysis nicely but for other games it just dont seem to make a important impact, get 125fps constant in cod4 "changed maxfps" with maxfps turned up to 1000 ive seen it hit 300fps in quiet places on a map, its crazy

Yeah every time I upgrade my video card, its usually time to upgrade the PSU as well. Do you have a 6 pin PCI-E Connector? or one of those adapters that utilizes 2x 4 pin connectors into a 6 pin? If you do I'd say go for it. If you don't it might be time to put an extra $55 on that credit of yours. Might as well build up your credit and get something out of it too! Think about it. But I must say I like playing Crysis and all those other games on high. I just wish I could put more hours in in front of my 24 in. playing GAMES not HW. Best of luck! Its your decision.
