What's Required?

Heyo,

So I'm going to college next semester and I was thinking of building an HTPC for my dorm. Couple questions first.

1. What parts/specs should I be looking for? I know literally nothing about recording TV and the like.
2. Can I have the stream go into my PC first (to record), then output it to a TV that'll be in the dorm? I assume so, but I don't know how I'd go about that.
3. Is it possible to watch live TV with the HTPC, then switch to a recorded show/channel?
4. What software will I need?
5. I can network it to my main PC and watch the media on there, correct?
6. Reserved...I know I'll have a few more questions...

Hang with me here, I'm a fast learner

1. the same hardware as any other pc with the but with a tv card and quieter fans
2. depends on the software if you can record but most decent s/w will and to get it on the tv just hook the tv to the graphics card
3. yes its as simple as swapping over to a different mp3 in media player
4. if you are using vista mendia centre is pretty good also the tuner card should come with s/w which maybe good
5. that is correct
6. bring on the questons

By same hardware as any other PC...I'm assuming you don't mean another quad + a 3870?

If you do...oh boy...

the most cost effiecent hardware for an HTPC:
780G motherboard
4200+ a64x2 or better. (Minum for blu ray)
Phenom if needed
3450/3470 if you need the extra juice for hybrid crossfire.
Cheap matx HTPC case.

I'm thinking of buying a terabyte drive (nothing fancy or fast) to load my oodles of videos.
You might want a wireless PCI/PCI-express card for internet if you got a router.
Depending if you want blu ray, drives cost like $170+ and should continue to drop soon enough.
