The Big Decision.

Thread Starter
I am looking at getting a new GPU to replace the X1950Pro I am currently running.

The first one is the HD3850 512MB from ATI.
The second is the 8800GTS 320MB from nVidia.
I'm aware that the 8800 outperforms the 3850 slightly, but I may be able to get the 3850 for a decent amount cheaper than the lower end 8800GTS on newegg.

Now, my big problem is the 3.2GHz Pentium 4 I am running with HT.

How much bottleneck am I looking at, realistically?

Would I be better off upgrading to dual-core and a better motherboard and sticking with the X1950Pro, or would the new GPU still give me a better gain in gaming performance wise?

Think hard kids, I know my CPU is old, but I want the best bang for my buck, I can always get one or the other later down the road, I just want to know what will make the biggest difference now.

Thank you, kind persons, thank you.

That proc is gonna be a huge bottleneck for any new card you're considering. However, it's not as much a bottleneck for the card you're using now, if at all. So upgrading your proc now would do almost nothing for you, while if you upgrade your video card you might get 66% of what it would normally give you if you were on a decent proc (which would still be a larger gain than un-bottlenecking your current card)

tldr version: buy the video card

Very interesting thought, anyone else?

If you could get the 3850 and a cheap dual core, maybe a E2160, then you'd be set.

I respect your opinion on that, but I seriously can only do one or the other right now.

P4 with x1950 pro, similar to your setup

Marginal gains in the graphics department; all the gain came from the cpu score. That should be all you need, ya?

Actually I would need to see the 8800 with the P4 and the X1950Pro with the C2D to get a good idea.

EDIT: Saw the C2D with the X1950Pro at 6428, just need to find a P4 with an 8800.

Graphic score shot way up.

Putting the x1950 with a c2d is pointless... If it didn't gain anything on a quad, it sure as hell isn't gonna gain anything on a dual.

The entire first page and half of the second are crossfire setups.
