What would YOU guys do? - Page 2

According to what I know, the instability came first so he tried removing memory and swapping slots.

I don't know the extent of this guy's computer knowledge but I just can't believe it would work so good for me and then just completely let go a day later without some kind of outside influence.

Well, you have 2 options as I see it:

1. Offer to check the computer out, and see whats causing this.
and if you can't do that or don't have the time...
2. Ignore the guy, you'll seem like an ass, but if you don't have the time, you don't..

no use dwelling on it.. either diagnose it or don't... case closed

agreed. You seem like you are feeling responsible... Tell him whatever he did to change hardware must have made the system unstable. Like talntid said above, if he swapped RAM and didn't reset the timings in the BIOS, he's gonna get MAJOR blue screens. And I've heard swapping vid-cards on an integrated platform without cleaning out video drivers can cause some serious software issues as well.

Thanks for the help and advice guys!

This sounds like complete BS. I've dealt with people like this before. They buy something impulsively for whatever reason and later regret it. Instead of asking to see if you'd refund them, they make up excuses as to why you MUST refund them (i.e. defective hardware).

You mentioned that he contacted you within a couple days, which means he had some time to play around with it and potentially screw things up.

If you know for a fact that it was working fine before you sold it, you don't have to refund him or give him any free consulting. These are part of the risks of buying used hardware.

tell him you want it back for a few days, so you can hook it up to your "BIOS DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER". tell him it scans the BIOS for errors, and also checks the "memory" for previous settings. so you can tell if it has been OC'd resulting in damage. then you will run a "program" in windows that checks all current and previous hardware settings. explain that if he used something like Ntune, or Rivatuner to tweak his vid card, you will be able to tell. if he did something to mess it up, he will politely decline and leave you alone.
if he bites, well, tell "man i was just kidding", you bought it as-is, enjoy.

as funny as that would be to do to an OC'ing nubbin, he probably doesn't even know what ntune or rivatuner are anyway so he'd just be like LOLwut?! and get severley confused

Just tell him since he opened it and modified it, its out of your hands to fix it.

I was thinking the Dopplar Effect caused the main rotation capacitor to discharge which effectively overloaded the secondary bus.

Tell him it was in perfect working order when he purchased it and any damage or issues he is having must have been caused by him and that all sales are final. If he gives you any lip pull out your Beretta...... oh wait....... This isn't an R. Kelly Music Video?
