I've used 70% all my life. Haven't had any problems using it.

Get ArctiClean if you can. Or 99% Isopropyl alcohol, it's laboratory grade so you might not be able to get it anywhere. If you don't have access to the above or don't want to pay for it, 70% isopropyl alcohol works too, I used it before.

ive used 70% for most of my TIM cleaning. but 90% and higher is highly recommended...90%USP+ = little to no oily substance in the microfibers of the metal

i use some orange oil based cleaner (goo-gone) first to remove most of the grease, and then i use alcohol to remove the rest of the orange oil. From what i can tell, the ArctiClean stuff uses an orange oil based cleaner (ever smelled and orange oil based cleaner? the arcticlean stuff has an orangey smell to it)

For those of you using rubbing alcohol (as opposed to isopropyl), keep in mind that rubbing alcohol contains a small amount of moisturizing oils which make it safer to use on skin (hence why it's called "rubbing"). This oil can be detrimental to heat transfer, so when possible, use either the highest percentage of isopropyl alcohol that you can find. Acetone (which you can easily find at Wal-mart and the like, amongst the nail polishes) also works well.

In theory, 190-proof grain alcohols such as Everclear should also work well, but keep in mind that while it's 95% alcohol, there's also 5% of water in it.

I gotta ask.....

Has anyone ever actually found a report or tested the diff between 70% & >90% isopropyl?? Granted anything with oil additives or petroluem bases would be a bad idea but I really really really dont think you will see a darned bit of diff in thermal transfer between 60% & 99% isopropyl. The only diff will be the extra circle or two of rubbing or elbow grease .

Ive used anything ranging from 60 - 91% isopropyl and acetone and straight up bacardi in a bind and my temps havent changed a damn bit ever on the same cpu lol
