Passive VGA: 9600gt vs 3850

Thread Starter
Hello,

I want to build a new PC mainly for work but sometimes I want to play as well . It will run almost 24/7. A display size is 24" (1920x1200).

One of my main requirement that the system must be as quiet as possible. So I want only passive VGA cards. (I know the new active VGAs are very quiet but after some month they will be louder and louder.)

So the 2 candidates are a Sppahire 3850 and a Gigabyte 9600gt. (Here both are in the same price.) 9600gt is faster but consumes more energy and so it makes more heat. However as I know Gigabyte has a magic tool GamerHUD to overclock the card.

Is it possible to downclock the VGA with this tool as well for 2D work?
Any other recommendation for this situation?

BTW, I'm not 100% sure but if you had to go with your 2 cards and not my suggestions, I'd pick the gigabyte one because it looks like it'll cool better

EDIT:Ooops you're in Hungary

Some years ago I had some problem with cheap cards with CRT display. Maybe it is not more relevant nowadays with LCDs but is there any difference in the display quality in 2D (not 3D) mode between 3850 and 9600. Or any difference between brands?

Throw an HR-03 GT with a silent fan on it.

Using a passive card is very risky, they tend to get extremely hot.

i agree with other members on this, you can get a fan that you will NOT hear when your case is closed and it will keep it just within safe temps. you don't want to fry your GPU on a hot day just because it didn't have a silent fan on it. it'll be worth it in the end.

With the 3870, it was working totally fine with a passive AC Accelero S1 with a 820/1200 overclock. Great card that doesn't put out as much heat as nvidia's 8XXX and 9XXX series. It's 55nm so thats a + if ure wanting passive. The 3850 is almost the same thing, so that should work wonders.

Get a 3870 or 9600GT with a Accelero S1 cooler. It works really well and is a completely passive solution if you don't add the turbo modules. It's pretty cheap too.

I don't want to buy any additional cooling system. The HR-03 GT price is almost the half of a 9600gt here.
However - to be safe - I planed to include a fun runing on 5V instead of 12V to make some airflow. (An AC fan costs only 5-6$ here)

The last VGA card with fan I had was a Riva TNT2 card and there I was not able to control the fun speed. Which cards have manually adjustable fan speed?

Is there any tool for NVidia chips which can downclock the card in 2D mode automaticaly? As I know ATI has PowerPlay or what to do this?
