should I raid? If not, which drive to buy?

disk 0 is a 320gb seagate barracuda st3320620as perpendicular recording.
disk 1 is a 160gb maxtor
disk 2 is an 80 gig dying maxtor.

I need to repartition and reinstall windows but can't because all these drive are 75% full with video editing projects and other things that I can't delete.
At first I was going to just buy a 500+ gigger and throw that in there, transfer all my media to it, reinstall windows on the 320gb (or the 500+ ?), and sell the 160 (it's ide so ixnay on going external, slow right?)

but then I started reading about everyone going raid and wondered if it's worth it to buy another 320 barracuda instead. Though I really dislike the idea of conjoined twins.

RAID what with what drives?

Not really necessary. If you got one of those new 640gb SE16 Caviar Western Digital Drive, it would perform nicely on its own.

Oh, oops. Edited. I meant that I would buy a another 320 to raid up. But for slightly more I could get 500+ and just throw that in there.

Also should a huge drive like that be my primary, or will it preform even better than my current 320?

is the 500gb se16 of comparable performance or is there something special about the 640? after tn tax newegg puts that think around 143 or 22cents a gig. 99$ after tax for the 500gb would be more in my price range.

I decided to try RAID0 with my 2 80gb WD drives and I like it. One word of advice, make sure you have another drive for back-up. If you are using a mobo's RAID controler and it fails, you can't access the files without using the same controller.

It is more work and can be a hassle if something goes awry, but that is the price we pay for performance, lol. Also, as dr4gon stated, if you have a newer hdd, they perform pretty well as it is. It all depends on how much you want it.

I did a raid 0 with two 320gigs and didn't see anything load faster but XP. I now use 3 drives.

If you want things to load faster put them on a different drives

Drive 1. XP with Vista pagefile
Drive 2. Games
Drive 3. Vista with Vista pagefile

So I went with this
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

There were lots of 500gb drive and almost no 640gb drives. So I figure if I ever decide to go raid in the future this drive would be easier to find. Lots of people on newegg raving about how quiet it is, so we'll see. Especially considering I have a barracuda that clicks like a banshee.

I'm building a new rig and for the most part will be using it to play games. For example, on my current rig, I have about 250GB of games installed. So I'm thinking about this configuration for the new rig:

Two 250GB 32MB cache ES.2 Seagates in RAID 0 with the 640 AAKS WD as a backup drive.

Is that a good idea?

drives here

So which one should I use as my system drive?
Which one should should I partition a leading edge 4 gig page file on?
should I even worry about partitioning a leading edge section for the system? (file transfers between partitions blow cats)
