You'd think it would have a pretty big effect on the memory benchmarks.

Not really. Assuming they're both running in dual channel, the amount of ram makes no difference (Within reason of course, if you're having to use the pagefile to run a program your speeds are gonna suffer) Those benchmarks don't even approach that point.

Speaking of which, what's the configuration of the gateway? 3x1 gb? Or 2x1 gb + 2x512mb? Either one would cut it's performance some.
In Progress...

That means for the price of the Gateway you could buy an iMac, boost its hard drive to match the Gateway’s, purchase a copy of Vista to boot—and still save $100
And for the price of an iMac you could buy an HTPC with a built in touchscreen and the ability to run more than WoW...

Somebody like Antec or Thermaltake needs to come out with a similar style case so we can stop these ridiculous reviews.

lol Well if that's true, I was wrong. I definitely thought the amount of installed RAM mattered, especially if it was running dual-channel.

WOW THE MAC IS FASTER!
(if you are to believe this über flawed review)

Even if it was, how many games can it play? Almost a handful? Awesome. yes, I realize gaming isn't everything, but what the point of saying you have the faster device? Mac loads Productivity app#1 in 3 seconds, instead of 4 for the HP? OMG I NEED TO THROW MY PC IN THE CRAPPER AND GET A MAC.

And since it even runs Vista better than the Gateway, I can only assume they have magic enchanted hardware that is inherently better than Gateway's hardware. Or Popular Mechanics should stick to articles about engineering and space, and leave benchmarking to actual professionals
/rant&sarcasm

Macs are good at many multimedia tasks. They are a good simple/general computing device. But they are overpriced IMO and they are even more closed source than Microsoft (and that's saying something). But Macheads will always defend them and PC people will shrug or laugh.

I can't wait for OSX to gain more of a marketshare, just so they can feel some of the 'benefits', like malware and various forms of virus. Security through obscurity is not security at all. It just means that people don't care.

There is no big difference to have 1GB or 2GB or 3GB or RAM...
I have played many games and most of the time a game doesn't utilize more than 800MB... Even Crysis in Very High utilizes 1,5 GB. These benchmarks are not memory hungry, and will not get more than 1GB.

"Mac OS X Leopard vs Vista" should be the title.
Because there are many OSs for PC - Linux, Free/Net/OpenBSD, Windows and so on...

Sadly this is very true here at OCN. To many close-minded, ignorant fools.

Also 90% of you clearly didn't even read the article. (Why comment if you didn't read it?)

iMac = $1499
Gateway = $1800

macbook = $1299
Asus = $1299

So yeah the Mac is "so overpriced".

I don't know where you got those numbers but they are definitely inflated. I just went to their website and got a Gateway for 900 dollars, same specs as imac which was 1200 dollars... It is well known that the mac is more expensive than the pc. I don't know why you would make that argument...

Also I have worked with macs. I have worked with pc's. I happen to like pc's more and feel there are far many more things you can do with a pc you can't do with a mac. Let alone the software issues. Just from a personal preference I enjoy the pc more.

Just because Apple's iMac has the computer built into the monitor doesn't mean thats what everyone wants.

I just specced a Dell Inspiron Desktop with a 20" Monitor, Q6600, 2GB Ram, and Blu-Ray, with everything else the same(even bluetooth and wireless N), and the total came to $1109. So yes, I consider a $300 dollar difference for lesser hardware to be 'overpriced'
