just lapped my q6600, here are the results...

Hey everybody, I am pretty new to the forum, I figured I would make my first appearance and talk about my freshly lapped q6600. Keep in mind that I have the B3 revision so I didn't get any insane Overclock or anything, but I think getting to 3.2ghz on safe volts is pretty good for my B3.

Anyway before I lapped anything I was getting temps of 79-79-70-70 on an overclock to 3.0ghz. That was at vcore of 1.3375 (1.304 in CPU-Z)

I first lapped the Tuniq Tower 120 only, which got me the same temps, but at an overclock at 3.2ghz with vcore at 1.35 (1.314in CPU-Z)

Next I decided to void the old warranty and lap my q6600. With the same OC as above (3.2ghz) I sit at temps of 67-67-61-61.

Hope this post will give some others of the possible drop they can get from lapping their HSF and CPU.

And as a side note, after I updated the system section of my profile how to I get it to appear in my Signature? sorry if this is asked elseware.

looks to be updated in system =)

Good job on the lapping, but I believe the intel spec for the B3 is 62c max, I could be wrong. But I just wanted you to have a heads up B4 your shopping for a new cpu....

About the same temp drops I got from lapping, I have a GO but dropped 10c under load from lapping and gave me an extra bump to OC, my cpu doesnt get above 60c under load tho, so be careful with those temps. Look on intel site for the B3 revision specs..

Q6600 B3 specs From Intel - 62.2c max and a max VID of 1.5... the two dont seem to coincide without a amazing cooling solution..

Hmmmm, thanks for the info. I thought I saw somewhere that my B3 could handle up to 75c but I have been proven wrong, thankfully. I will definetly see if i can't lower that voltage some, or else I'm going to have to back off a little. Thanks again.

Those temps seem really high for that vcore. I would make sure that you are seqating the cooler properly and that you are using the correct amount of TIM. What are you using to monitor temps?

I think that is normal for the B3 stepping.

I was just thinkin the same thing...

I use OCZ Freeze, and AS5, both seem to work best with just a dab dead center of the cpu, about the size of a grain of rice. For an extra warm fuzzy, i usually push down and give the HS a small twist to spred it a bit.

but 1.35 volts and a lapped cpu/tuniq should give you under 60c max load temps, unless the B3 rev runs hotter than the GO

just some things to look into

also with that 680i board you should consider doing the pencil mod, if you go to the sticky 680i overclocking guide and check the first post you will see it described in detail. You have a pretty good vdrop/vdroop as I did with my 680i but after doing the pencil mod my vcore is 1.3375 in bios and 1.31 in windows and it does not drop at all under loads. By stabilizing your vcore you can lower it as you don't have to account for the drop. I can't express how easy and effective it is.

Thanks for all the posts, and yes the B3 revisions run a million times hotter, and way less stable. Also I have done the pencil mod so I don't drop in voltage when the cpu is under load at all. It just reads lower then what I set it at in bios, no big deal.

I'll do some testing once I get home in a couple hours to see what my 24/7 OC is going to be. Hopefully I'll get to 3.2 with cooler temps, but I don't know.

Hey Satcom, if you see this please post your temps, just interested in what your getting... thanks
