[digitimes] 90Plus to become new power supply standard in next 3-5 years

The 90Plus standard is expected to become an industry standard for power supplies within the next 3-5 years, which will push up the efficiency of power supplies and help in saving energy consumption, according to Yancey Hai, CEO of Delta Electronics.

Although the 80Plus now serves as a common standard for the power supply industry, there is room for further improvement, driving the initiation of the 90Plus standard, remarked Hai during a presentation delivered at Digitimes' 10th year anniversary industry event.

A total of 13 power supplies manufactured by Delta have received 80Plus certification, and the company will continue to work on products that will comply with the 90Plus standard, Hai stated.

In addition, Delta also supports the CSCI (Climate Savers Computing Initiative) program initiated by the international leading IT companies, including Intel and Google, Hai added, noting that the CSCI aims to reduce the power consumption of desktops, notebooks and workstations 50% by 2010.

Delta's power supplies now account for a 50% global market share in the high-end server and workstation segment, with the efficiency rates of its power supplies reaching as high as 90%, Hai claimed.

I don't think 90% efficency at 20%, 50%, and 100% is possible with multi-voltage ATX PSUs.... I do not remember seeing a PSU break 90% efficency at any load.

My thoughts exactly.
I think the highest i've ever read/seen was about 86%.

I beleive I saw 89% once (but not at a 100% load). I don't know how much more improved PSUs can get to get the necessary 5-8%

It would be very easy to create a highly efficient (95%+) PSU over all those load levels, it would just cost $2-3K+ and be the size of a small microwave. However, the slight energy savings would never pay for itself, even over a long period of 24/7 use.

Hmmm, it all depends on what the industry is currently using to convert ac to dc. There's different ways (different type circuits). If they're using some cheaper way to do it then they could improve it but it's going to be spendy, but by that time the manufacturing process should drop the costs. (that's all if they are using a cheap way to do it otherwise I'm clueless )

90+ will be very interesting to see. Large servers or data centers will really benefit from the reduction in their power bill, assuming the PSUs are priced reasonably. I have a feeling 90+ will pretty much mean lower nineties.
