Best upgrade from an 8800GTX?

Thread Starter
I have an 8800GTX, a PC P&C Silencer 750W Quad, and a P5B Deluxe (non-SLI) motherboard.

I'm looking to upgrade. Mostly because I want to bump Crysis from High settings to Very High settings (I'm currently running a low resolution monitor, 1280x1024. I want to get a widescreen, but nothing huge.) Also to pimp some higher 3DMark06 scores (currently I'm only hitting 12000, it's really hard to overclock my computer now that it has 8GBs of RAM).

I'm not opposed to replacing the motherboard, or anything else in the computer for that matter as I've already upgraded about half of the original components and am slowly accumulating enough spare parts to build another computer. Having support for DDR3/PCI-e 2/other fun stuff aint a bad deal either.

I've been primarily considering getting either a 9800GX2, or a SLI Motherboard and another 8800GTX. Any advice?

Your rig is fine. I don't see a GPU upgrade for your rig especially at 1280x1024.

Yeah save for a better monitor dude! The 8800GTX still owns!

Too expensive. He could SLi 8800gts g92's for the price of another gtx, let alone what he could sell his current for.

And yeah, your resolution is so low... There's no reason to upgrade.

How about a pair of 9800GX2's? That should handle pretty much anything Of your options the GX2 is the best way to go. It's not worth it to buy a new mobo yet. Wait for DDR3 to get cheaper then look at that stuff.

You really don't need to upgrade at all in truth though...

I want to upgrade. Even at this resolution I can't play Crysis on Very High and I'm only squeaking by on High (benchmarks 30 FPS). Mostly because overclocking is a lot more difficult now that I have 8GBs of RAM, but still!

Also if I replace the card I'll be able to use it in building another computer.

Newegg shows 8800GTXs for $300 now. But why would SLI 8800GTS be better than SLI 8800GTX?

I would get a G92 GTS or a 9800GTX. At that resolution the 768megs of ram on that GTX are not helping you. I'm about 100% sure you will see an increase in frame rate at that low of a resolution with either of those two cards. If you really want to upgrade get the GX2. You will see a good bump in performance.

Anything that's running at 1920x1200 the GTX will generally pull ahead of, but with your current monitor I do believe you will see better results.
