Thinking about a MacBook - Page 2

I could get a cheap laptop but then it would be useless by next year, like I said this thing has to last all the way through 2 years of College and 3+ years of university without an upgrade. Also considering I will be carting it around for the next 5 years the looks of it are important too, a Dell from 5 years ago looks like a miniature fridge but apples always seem to look reasonably stylish no matter how old they get.

Also, I can buy the apple on business and claim back the tax, effectively making it £750ish.

A "cheap" laptop would have the same specs as the mac you're considering and last just as long.

True, but it wont have OSX or Apples warranty (which is known to be great). It all comes down to personal preference. If he thinks its worth the price the get it. If not then get a vista laptop, and dual boot linux or if you want OSX ( hackintosh)

Without trying to start another flame war, I don't think it would last as long, the build quality just isn't the same.

I would recommend a look into a cheap Dell Latitude. The small models are very very nice, thinner than the macbook, and much better built.

As for quality, the Pro's are really high quality (with the exception of them being fragile,) plain jane Macbooks aren't any better than the previously mentioned Latitude.

Or look at an IBM / lenovo machine. They are very nicely made, and built for business use. If you like the OS, then consider buying a good PC and hack it to run OSX.

I have several old laptops laying around here that are still working fine.

A compaq from 1999 (I think this thing has 16mb of ram, lol) a gateway from 2003, and my new asus which, imo, is flashier than a macbook.

2.4Ghz C2D
2GB RAM
250GB HDD

The only cheap laptops that have that spec are much larger and not as portable as far as I can see anyway.

Amen. My dad it that
At this point, there is no difference between a Mac and a PC. I used to be a die-hard Mac user (recording engineer), but now a Mac is just a PC with a fancy-lookin GUI, shiner case, and ridiculous pricetag. If you plan on getting an Intel Mac and not using software that requites MacOS10, just get an Intel PC. If you really want MacOS, look into a used Powerbook. Better craftsmanship than the new Macs IMO, and should easily last another 3 years. My 400MHz G4 Titanium from 6 years ago is still going strong.
As a side note, I've got nothing against PCs or PPCs, I just can't stand the Intel-Apple partnership.

So I am thinking of getting a Macbook black with 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD. I realise this is OTT for work and internet but I want it to last around 5 Years without bogging down, + it just looks osm uch nicer in Black

My question basically is, can I open and save in formats that will be useable by PC's running XP/Vista, or are they totally incompatible?

After student discount I can get the above spec for £950 including iWork 08.

So will this last a long time, and is it the best option for the money?

I know there is the Dell XPS laptop but the GFX card in it will just be draining the battery life seeing as I won't be gaming at all on it.

Thanks for any suggestions, I would also consider Linux if I could get it on a laptop that a) looks good b) has a propper res screen (so not an EEE).

edit: I should point out that I have only ever used windows as an OS, never even seen someone using OSX or Linux so all I know about them is the general hype of fast boot times, security, ease of use, etc etc.
I did the identical thing you are considering. It's amazing, and I love it. I even work at an Apple Reseller which is kind of funny considering my rig. I use my Mac for all of the serious stuff, work, school, etc...and my PC for gaming and OC'ing and stuff. Sounds like a reversed situation here but it's not. I get work done with my Mac faster than I ever could with my PC.

2GB ram comes standard on most of them, though the hard drive is only 120/160gb on most, I wouldn't consider that a deal breaker. They're easily replaceable if needed anyway.

The processor is overkill for what he plans to do with it.
