I recall something about non compressed textures for the whole "larger than 50Gb" statement he made. Not sure what the out come of that was, but i believe the reason for this was to reduce loading time from less cpu cycles used for decompressing the textures...

Anyways,

Coming from a programmers perspective, there is a whole lot more going on behind the scenes on a hardware level for most people here to fully understand what is being done per instruction on a CELL, let alone have the competence level to agree/disagree with others about it...

The big thing about programming that most of us here know about is that "code optimization is huge to get games to run smoothly. Knowing how to program in higher level languages is one thing. Understanding whats going on with the assembly is something else. I am going to take a guess and say that whatever SDK devs have to use to make games for most consoles, don't really care about assembly level optimization...

Coding methods like bit wise operators are huge cpu cycle savers. A lot of people don't see this part of things when trying to optimize, because you do need a higher level of understanding of what is going on, on a hardware level...

Anyways, enough nerd talk from me. The main point i want to get out there is that nobody really knows how to max out the hardware. And if you read up on the article, it says that its the MSG4 engine that he claims is being maxed out. So again, nothing to do with the cell...

What your saying makes alot of sense, but what I said also makes alot of sense, although you have all the correct information about the "xeon processor" the thing is it only has 1MB L2 Cache for all three processors. Which is a very small amount even for one processor nowadays, also what makes me laugh is the "cell processor" only has a 512 mb cache. All these factors combined logically makes the xeon a weak processor and that is why they are constantly doing revisions to it. Also this is the first time I have heard of any consoles doing revisions to their components after they have been introduced to the customers and that is why Microsoft is taking a big hit. They rushed their products.

We'll call me crazy but i think consoles are just a consumer tool used by sony M$ etc, to make ridiculous amounts of money, while holding back technological advances in games quite substantially. Sure, there's positive aspects to consoles but i really just don't see the point. What i would prefer to see is game directors signing exclusivity contracts with graphic card makers rather then consoles..THAT would be interesting.

I have both the PS3 and 360. There will comes a day where both consoles would limit developers expectations. Good find +1, still can't wait for the game.

Your basing pocessor performance on L2 cache size? Revisions are done on microproccessors all the time. Their called Steppings (B3 G0,M0). Jesus dude just look on Wikipedia or something. The PPE has 512k L2 cache while each SPU has their own amount of ram. You don't need alot of Cache with a memory controller on board plus super fast rambus ram.
