Fsb:dram Ratio?

Thread Starter
Ok, it's been a very long time since I been here, because i have not updated my computer forever. And I'm just gona ask a few things.

I just bought a Barebone Kit from Tigerdirect which included the

E8400 Intel Core2Duo 3.0GHz (Not OC'd)

Ram - OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory @ 4-4-4-15

Now, my first question is why am I running at a 5:6 ratio?
All these numbers are confusing the hell out of me and I haven't even overclocked anything. I payed the money and want the best performance out of my PC.

To tell you the truth, I'm not even sure what I'm looking for because I just have a feeling some thing's wrong here.

The reference clock (FSB), FSB Frequency, and the Memory bus frequency seem a little low than listed don't they?
Here are my Specs:

I'm editing my system specs after I submit this thread. And you'll see for yourself what I'm dealing with.

I'm so desperate to play a game right now, and I formatted twice because I was messing around with nVidia graphic drivers and now this crap... Anyone out there? I probably can't get any answers anywhere else.

333.3 (your FSB) / 5 = 66.67 * 6 = 400 (the stock speed of your ram)

Quite simply, the stock speed of your memory requires a 5:6 ratio on a FSB of 333MHz.

Ntune is detecting your CPU multiplier incorrectly. It may have a problem with the new 45nm chips. If you insist on using ntune (it's generally a load of crap) you should update to the latest version if you haven't already.

Everything (barring the ntune error) looks exactly as it should for your system's components at stock speed. The reduced multiplier in CPU-Z is probably due to SpeedStep automatically reducing CPU speed under light load. However, if you have it manually set to 8, you should probably change it to 9 (the default).

Well, at first the mem settings in BIOS were not what they were supposed to be when I took my ram out of the box. The default settings were 5-5-5-??. Would that make a difference? I'm downloading 3dmark06 right now and gona try both settings.

If your memory is rated for 4-4-4 (CAS-tRCD-tRP) you will likely have to set those manually, along with the specified memory voltage. Most memory will default to 5-5-5 for compatability with the JEDEC standard of 1.8 vdimm that most boards default to.

I set them all to 4-4-4-15. That's what was written on the package. And the voltage is standard. I had no problem with that, but here's one more question. I see on your sig rig you have the memory timings set at higher numbers. Do you suggest I try that out or leave it the way it is? I'm still confused to why all my hardware is running at lower speeds than the details listed. Why should I pay extra to something that's not going to be used?

One person's settings are often not directly transferable. I run the tightest (lowest) timings I can get stable at DDR-1200. Your memory is different and you are running it at a different speed. 4-4-4-15 is better for the memory speed (and likely voltage) you are currently running at.

As for your hardware running at lower speeds than listed, I doubt that's entirely true. The CPU is supposed to clock down automatically, unless you go out of your way to disable that feature. Fire up a program that actually loads the chip and the speed should jump to the full 3GHz. If it does not it's a simple setting change to get it to do so. The vast majority of high performance memory is supposed to start up at a speed lower than it is offically rated for. If it didn't most systems attempting to use it would not beable to POST, or would be quite unstable. You are expected to manually set the the timings and voltages of such memory.

I don't see this as a downside. Those who cannot manage a few simple BIOS changes probably are oblivious to the modest increase in performance anyway.

I would say that all you need to do is enter the BIOS (avoid using software in Windows to change BIOS settings), increase the Multiplier to 9, and everything will be fine. If you leave Speedstep enabled, the processor will idle at a lower clock speed than 3.0GHz, but it will shoot up to 3.0GHz on full load. If I remember correctly, the purpose of this feature is to save electricity since our computers already consume so much of it.

As for the ratio, don't worry about it. I've been told time and time again on here that I shouldn't worry about the ratio, and that with our new systems like yours and mine, a ratio of 1:1 won't necessarily mean peak performance. It's just a number representing exactly what it is: a ratio. Granted, I'd hate to see those numbers get too far apart. My ratio is like yours: it's 12:11, which is almost 1:1 just like yours.

Edit: I'm finally done editing.

That was exactly the next question I was going to ask. If you see in the first pic's CPU-Z it says core #0 speed @ 2667. And you noted that I increase the multiplier to 9, which I did before I got back on here. Are both cores supposed to run at 3.0GHz or 2.6Ghz to somehow equal out the 3.0GHz? Thanks in advance, I'm glad I came here for some support.
