Another E8400 Thread...

CPU-z picks up my CPU running @ 3000mhz and 2000mhz at the same time. What's up with that? The numbers keep changing in front of my eyes. One speed won't stay.

Why is this happening? I recently had some memory errors, probably because of bad timings and now this.

Do you have Intel Thermal Management enabled in the BIOS? It will lower your Mult when it's not under load, to conserve power. Watch the CPU Mult in the CPU-Z screen and see if it jumps back and forth from 9 to 6. If it does, that's your problem.

Thermal throttling. Your motherboard has a bios option to allow the cpu to throttle down when its not being stressed. This saves power. Not a bad thing, reduces heat. This is normal.
Go through the bios options, disable any power saving modes to eliminate this. If overclocking, this will hurt your stability.

Both features are disabled. Thermal control and throttling. Now I'm worried.

Go through bios again and recheck. After disabling these options, dont forget to save changes (F10 key usually) so it'll stick. If it keeps going from 9x > 6x you've missed a function somewhere.

Do you have any software-based OCing programs?

Nope. I fixed my problem. There's another feature in my BIOS called 'C1E' in which it disables or halts one core while being idle or something like that. I disabled that and not it's locked at 3000mhz. Thanks for helping out cause I wouldn't found this answer myself. Now on to test my memory with memtest. God...blue screen of deaths.

Now, I'm sure your ram will run at default speeds at low fsb.
Set 333 (quad pumped) to 400, leave your 9x multi alone, bump the vcore to 1.23-1.26 and run it at 3.6g. Your cpu shouldn't break 60c with CoreTemp max.
Raise fsb higher later.
I ran 9*400fsb=3.6g at default cpu voltage (1.185) stable for about 2 weeks without issue. Later bumped up vcore for heavy gaming to 1.25v without bluescreens after hours.
BTW: These 45nm cpu's will fry themselves if vcore exceeds 1.365, so beware. 1.365vc gets most owners up near 4.2g+-. Don't allow CoreTemp's to go above 72C if you care for the cpu.
