New to the Complex Side of Computers

Thread Starter
Hello, I currently own a eMachines T5212 (yes I know it seems they have a bad rep,) I am comfortably with the machine for my gaming needs currently I am playing Shadowbane, I now am trying to get to Age of Conan and I would like my computer in top condition. I realize I cannot overclock it without a hacked bios or what ever. If there is any link to somewhere I can see this program? Also I know the basics of computers, IE what things do and ram is good etc. I am hoping to get to the more complex part of basically remaking my emachines into my own. I slowly am getting to that point. Currently it is stock. Now I have some other questions.

I am looking into getting a much better video card, I am almost positive the Palit GeForce 8800 GT 1gb will fit because I have an ECI express spot. According to the eMachines website I can only expand to 2gb of ram...I was hoping to get 4 with these...

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...?EdpNo=3079597

Now is it possible to fit those on my rig or do I have to get 2 1gb sticks.

Essentially I have around $250 and I really would like to upgrade it as much as possible. I am not exactly sure what to do any help would be appreciated.

2 gb is enough for almost anybody.I probably don't exceed 55% of my 2 gigs ever.Measure the card and room you have before you buy it.

And you are running vista ultimate, wow. I am running ultimate x64 and it uses around 35-40% of my ram on idle and I can easily get it to 50% under load (I have 4 gigs).
My sidebar alone uses 500megs if the computer is left on for a couple days at a time.

To be quite honest with you, that machine needs a lot of work - overclocking should be the furthest thing from your mind with that machine.

To run a high-end graphics card, you're going to need a new power supply - however, a decent $80-$100 card like the 8600GT, HD2600XT, or HD3560 would most likely run just fine on your machine without a new power supply. Get a 256MB GDDR3 version of any of those cards - don't be suckered in by 512MB of RAM, especially if the card is only using DDR2 type RAM.

If you do want to push for a high-end card, you'll have to make sure the case can physically accommodate a 9" long graphics card, as well as have standard mounting points for an ATX power supply.

The actual system RAM could probably use some work as well - but it seems like the board only supports 2x1GB sticks, you can't use 2GB sticks. RAM is pretty cheap right now, you could most likely find a 2x1GB kit for that machine for $40. Even so, 1GB isn't terrible.

My own advice - pick up one of those mid-range cards I suggested (8600GT (not GTS by the way), HD2600XT, or HD3650) with 256MB of GDDR3 type RAM for around $85 or so, and save the rest for an all-new machine.

Does ypur power supply have enough power for that card and does it have the axillary power connectors required?

Not to discourage you, but putting money into that computer is a lost cause.

New video = new PSU, and an 8800gt will be bottlenecked by the CPU....so new CPU too. So, it you're upgrading the CPU, PSU and Video, why not get a better motherboard (that can use faster memory) too? then you'll need new memory also.

So what should I start out with then any suggestions? Maybe 2gb of ram so I can transfer it over to a new motherboard? I am not really sure about power supply to be honest. Thanks for all the help so far. My budget has been increased by the way to $450.

Essential could I build a decent gaming rig with some of my current parts transfered?

This is what I was looking at for building my own rig.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=TC3J-2341
This case comes with a 800watt power supply.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...M-M2NSLI-9500A
The only problem I see with this was apparently the motherboard doesn't have an AM2+ socket so therefore the CPU runs slower.

This graphics card fits fine with the case.

So with this being said, can I transfer the rest of my parts over from my old computer and I should be fine? Could really use some help here thanks.

Is this budget overall for a single motherboard component or for the entire system ?. Personally I recomment Antec cases.

What I am doing is trying to make a new rig but still take some of the stuff off my old eMachines, IE the Hard drive, Modem, Sound Card, and CD-ROM. So I do not have to spend all that much.

With the stuff I posted above I would end up paying $459 with rebates.
