My new build just popped with burning smell

Thread Starter
I just built a system and couldn't get it to POST or even make any beeping noises at all. (LED and fans work though).

In trying to get it to work I took out the CPU and powered up. Still no beeping noises, but then it crackled a bit and made a strong burning smell. Not sure what happened - no visible signs of burning.

Can someone please offer any help of what to do next? Cheers.

Here's the build:-
CPU: Intel Dual Core e2160 (new)
MB: Asus P5W DH Deluxe (I got it 3 days ago from Aria bargain basement - seal broken but looks new)
RAM: Crucial 2GB (1GBx2) PC2-4200 (new)
Graphics: Asus En7300GT silent (new)
Power Supply: Tagan TG480-U01 (3 years old)
Case: TigerMax SF562T1 (cheap one)

You can test it by getting a friend's computer and switching out the parts.

I don't have friends that would let me do that. I guess I could buy some new bits and then sell left overs on eBay, although I just don't have much cash to spend at the moment.

I am thinking as soon as I break the seal it loses a good chunk of it's value and can't be returned. Is that true?

@Carlin Isn't it about 4:45am where you are?

you can Test your PSU out by using a Piece of Insulated Wire. just dont ask me where to plug it in, i can't remember. i'm sure someone here will know how though.

If that Still has the fan spinning, then its ok. If not, well, go Flip your circuit breakers after you unplug it.

Editz: Shiny Pic shows all, Plug bit up top,

That sounds like the mobo. I'd bet that since the seal was broken when you got it, that it has been sold before and returned faulty and then put out to sell again.

Should I plug the PSU into my old rig to see if it all works? If the PSU is faulty could it damage that as well?

either do like the pic i edited into my last post, or you can plug it into your current pc. If it doesn't start you know what the problem is. (DONT plug in the HDD's, DVD's or anything else, except maybe a fan if you have one.)
