Brasso works wonders

I use it on everything to make it nice and shiny. Takes out those little hair line scratches you are talking about.

How high a grit did you go to btw? I went to 2500 grit when I lapped my HSF.

polish isn't necessary when lapping. the purpose of lapping is to get a flat surface. it gets shinny in the process. i wouldn't recomend polishing it, just lap it and you will be fine.

when you sand for the flatness, the copper will appear, the cpu is nickel plated(i believe), this will get sanded off, showing copper.
