Overclock E6550 help

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've never tried to overclock a dual core CPU before. Regarding to my computer specs, what is the best clock to my processor? I was thinking about a 3.0GHz or 3.2GHz.

Another question, I've heard overclocking reduces hardware lifetime. Is this really true? For how long?, Months, Days, Years?

Thanks.

i had mine up to 3.2 on my gigabyte board. temps never got above 55c. your chip's lifetime should only be shortened by maybe 2 years, depending on how extreme your o/c is. 3.0 to 3.2 is a mild o/c, you should be fine! intel chips have like a 10 year lifetime, so you looking at 8 years, you will upgrade long before then!

If your memory modules can go up to 1000mhz, reaching 3.2Ghz will not be a problem. Some 65nm C2D's can run 3.2Ghz on standard voltage so it hardly has any impact on lifespan.

I have my e6550 over clocked to 3.5 ghz running at stock volts. I would not exceed 55c, hell I don't like mine to be more than 50c but I am just particular.

As far as what a good overclock is ...umm as far as you can get it safely is what I say

I have the e6550 as well and I have been desperately wanting to OC it but I'm also very afraid of destroying it due to my negligence thus, I joined this website to help me learn, guide me through the procedures and gain an overall better understanding of what I'd be doing.
