what sound card for my reciever for gaming?Digital or analog?

Thread Starter
I want to hook my Dell vostro 400 desktop(running XP) into my 5.1 stereo reciever for gaming with 5.1 surround sound. My reciever supports DTS and has both optical and coaxial digital input as well as multiple channel analog input. Do I go for a analog signal via 3x3.5mm rca y splitters? Or will gaming sound as good or better via digital? If Analog is better, are creative cards a good solution? If Digital is better, can someone recomend a card?

For XP, Creative is still a good solution for gaming. I'd also go with analogue because optical does not support the EAX effects on the X-Fis. Though sound quality should be better with optical. You have to decide if you want better sound quality or EAX effects

It depends on your receiver. Does you receiver have analogue inputs for all six channels of a 5.1? If it does then hellsyeah, get an X-Fi and use the analogue. If it only supports 5.1 through digital then you're going to have to get a card with DDL or DTS (which no Creative cards have).

For digital the Bluegear b-enspirer should work great.

The Auzen Prelude is great as it has DDL if you want to use digital output.

If you have a decent receiver you'll prob get better SQ running digital to your receiver. If you get an auzen then you should try both as the auzen sounds pretty decent.

I've got ERS on the back of mine with opa 627bp op-amps and it sounds pretty good

okay so far 1+ says digital will sound better; and +1 says analog will sound better. Hopefully some others will chime in. And yes, my reciever has all six rca inputs for 5.1 SS.

I have my xfi hooked up to my reciever via analog connections and it sounds great! EAX in games rule too!

So far 2x digital, 2x for analog.
This setup will be for gaming only, so music and movies sound quality will be of only little concern to me. Thanks

well, if its only for gaming, then you should stay with analog, because no xfi card can use EAX over a digital connection and get surround sound. If you're fine with EAX and 2.1 sound, then you'll probably get better sound quality with digital. Its up to whether you want to get surround or sound quality.

Yeah if you're gaming then get an X-Fi and use analogue. Although if you get the X-Fi Prelude you can always try both and decide which one suits your ears better.

you still haven't stated what receiver you have, or what speakers for that matter.

that is not true. The Auzen Prelude can encode on the fly with DDL
