SCSI controller with 790i Ultra

Thread Starter
I have an XFX 790i Ultra and I am about to add SAS drives. Here is my question. I am looking at the specs of my motherboard and it has the following slots.

2X PCI Express 2.0 X16
1X PCI Express X16
2X PCI Express X1
2X PCI

I am looking at SAS controllers and some say PCI express X4 and PCI express X8. Will these work with my motherboard. What kind of interface do I need to work with my motherboard.

Yes, those interfaces will work. The X4 and X8 just means those cards need 4 or 8 PCIe lanes. An X16 slot has 16 lanes, so any PCIe device can be placed in those. Just be careful that you don't confuse it with PCI-X, which is an entirely different interface.

Thanks, so the controller would fit in the same slot as a graphics card just not take up the full slot?

Yes, you can fit a pci-e x4 or x8 card in a x16 slot.

What controller are you using, I have 4 Fujitsu MAX3147RC drives in RAID 0 with a Adaptec 5405 and it is great. I will have to run HDtach soon and see what it is, when will a vista version come out by the way)

I am using a lsi 8704elp, as for hd tach you just use the xp one and run it in xp compatibility mode.
