ATI Overdrive will not accept any settings

Thread Starter
I've got an HD 3870. Recently I upgraded to the 8.4 catalyst drivers, and upon running the control center, I find I cannot set overdrive clocks. I've tried overclocks on both the core+memory, and the core alone, ranging from 10mhz to 100, and every time I hit "test custom clocks", or bypass that and click "apply" the overdrive clocks flip back to the defaults. This wasn't an issue before the "hotfix" drivers. I did a clean install. First used the Catalyst install manager to uninstall the CCC/ati software, then had Driver Cleaner Pro remove any and all ATI related software(i did wait until it was finished...took the damn thing a half hour). So, I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas on what to try.

Thanks

use atitool or rivatuner instead- overdrive is a bit buggy (as you can see) and has upper limits on it.

atitool is easy to use and works well.

I have atitool...and it's always misbehaved in Vista, at least for me. Overdrive worked flawlessly up until the Hotfix driver. I just want to know why it's doing what it's doing, or at least if anyone else has seen the behavior.

edit: just tried with atitool, same thing happens.. move the sliders, click set clocks, but they stay at their defaults.

yup same here, but i find that the performance in games has gone up considerably even without an overclock so its fine.atitool doesn't work too,it simply crashes if i change the clocks.

I also have found that atitool makes the gaming real glitchy...the ccc while it says current clock setting _ _ _ _ _; is lower than your default clock...when in the game mode it will clock much closer to the default when it's needed...just you/we don't see it working then.

try rivatuner then- last i heard it worked well with ati cards, and the latest version works with vista.
there is also ati tray tools, which used to work well (but i dunno about vista).

I'll try riva tuner...I know Overdrive isn't an enthusiast piece of software, but I liked only having to rely on one utility for the card. I'm expecting riva tuner to not work either, since both overdrive and atitool experience the same exact behavior.

So, I tried riva tuner...and it sorta works, but if I overclock the card, it's constantly set the the overclocked speed. It seems to void the Powerplay 2D clocks, which increases my idle power consumptuon by ~30W. I know it isn't a ton, but this system idles 21 hours out of the day, all the time. I guess I'll just have to stick with the stock speeds until Overdrive works...
