Mini FAQ:Inexpensive Laptops

Thread Starter
At least once a week, someone asks for advice on a cheap laptop to buy. And my cheap I mean $600 or less. Thus, I will share my knowledge that I gained from buying once of those cheap laptops last September.

To being, I purchased a Toshiba with a TL-56 Duel Core processor (1.8GHz). It had a 15.4in screen, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of ram. It was $550 from Office Depot at the time. I do not work for office depot but I found that the best deals on cheap laptops is there.

I use my laptop for school work, internet browsing, ect when I am not at my laptop. I have remote access setup so I can monitor my desktop when I am away. The laptop serves its purpose. I save anything processor extensive for my desktop.

This week there are two deals in office depot that are quite good.

Both are duel core which is fine for basic needs. neither have good graphics but as long as you dont plan to play games it will be fine.

With my toshiba which is similar to the one above i chose to upgrade the memory. For $32 you can get a 1x2GB of 667mhz Memory to add to the toshiba for a total of 2.5Gb. If you want to go even further then get two sticks. This will make the laptop seem fast for web, typing, ect. They have 6cell batteries which gives me about 100minutes of battery life while typing.

Here is the memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820208341

If you were to put linux on it, the need for more memory would be diminished also.
Hope this helps those who are searching for a new laptop
