another question then. I have an AM2 socket, Can i just upgrade from a single core to a dual core fairly easy by swaping out for a new chip?

i think your board is like an a7v8x-la or something which is made by Asus for HP/Dell PCs........and it's locked.......so in other words get a cheap board with cpu and make sure the ram you have will work with it and reinstall a different OS i guess too......that would be the eaziest way

Is the motherboard socket 939 or AM2?
edit: you already answered that one.

I would recommend a processor with 2x1mb of L2 cache or more (if they exist?)
My brothers e521 has an X2 5600+ with 2x512kb and I think it's worse than my opteron which has 2x1mb.

I don't think it's phenom compatible, and its not really worth it. You CAN overclock however, with Clockgen (software overclocking). Not as good as BIOS overclocking but it's better than nothing.

just my 2cents
