[techpowerup] Blu-ray Sales Up 351%

Thread Starter
Quote:
Following the format's victory over HD DVD earlier this year, Blu-ray disks have seen their sales soar to 351% of those during the same period last year. When combined with standard DVD sales, the first quarter of this year offered the first year-on-year sales increase since DVD sales peaked three years ago. Steek Beeks, President of Lionsgate, said:

Blu-ray had its second-best week ever in the seven days ending March 23, and we anticipate Blu-ray sales of $800 million to $1billion-plus for all of 2008, up dramatically from approximately $300 million last year.

Yea, I work at BestBuy Eden Prarie in MN, close by the corporate offices. Anyways, we can't keep any in stock. The only one we can is that LG superblu HD DVD/Blu ray one which is $600. Everything else is getting sold out, and our PS3 sales are SO high and 360 are LOW!

strangely in my store 468 we can hardly keep a 360 in stock if our life depended on it. But we have ps3s up the ass. Like we have them on top stock in appliances and then you have two pallets worths on the race track. The 360's we don't have any premiums and the elites, we only have enough to fill up under the 360 demo display. Come and take some of ours away please?

but seriously why wouldn't it be up 351%? if it wasn't then there would be a problem.

351% thats it? If I were the one format everyone wanted to get their hands on, that number would be much greater.

I'm still crying about poor HD DVD losing, although I expected as much.

A lot of people waited to see which format would win and then they hit the stores ASAP.

Me...I'm still waiting...the prices are still what I like to call...hmmm...stupid!

When I can buy a player (and a burner for my pc) for $150 (each) or less I will buy. Until then my step up conversion dvd player is still working just fine.

Just me 2 cents on the subject

Yes it's obvious that Blu-Ray sales were going to go up when HD DVD failed, but this is still news...now we've got a number to roll with, with which we can make comparisons. Unless you happened to know that Blu-Ray sales were going to go up in the vicinity of 351%, don't complain about this thread!

And to those saying it's too small of an increase - well for one thing, that is not a very small number. Digital downloads are supposed to be gaining ground, but obviously it's not having that much of an impact. Players apparently cost way too much, but they're also apparently worth the money, looking at that increase. The Blu-Ray 2.0 spec is hardly mainstream as far as hardware support goes, but I doubt that surge in sales is from mostly 2.0 players. See where I'm going with this?

I guess your Best Buy is the one inside Bill Gate's house or something. Seriously, that description is so far from average that I'm not sure if it's true.

Agreed, and until BluRay disc prices themselves are nearly the same as regular DVD are now, it really doesn't seem worth it.

Now that sales are roughly triple on the BluRay you think that'd warrant a price drop on the player's and discs...

I can't believe how much more the movies are. It's like an extra $10-$15 which is stupid IMO. They had the newest Pirates of the Caribbean in blu-ray playing on a PS3 hooked up to a 52" Sony Bravia LCD in Circuit City the other day and I thought it looked like crap. The picture was slightly crisper than DVD but it looked like I was watching something on the BBC. You know how that looks. Maybe the TV was ghosting IDK but I wouldn't waste my money on it.
