[techpowerup] Blu-ray Sales Up 351% - Page 5

Bit of a bitter statement there. A lot more than money exchanging hands went into HD DVD's demise. It's not like Sony and Toshiba were alone with a couple billion dollars each and started recruiting members. From the start, HD DVD was losing in both hardware and content support and only winning in price, which did not make enough of a difference in the end. A lot of companies, both hardware and content-oriented, started with support for Blu-Ray because they knew it was where the money was going to be. They didn't require an incentive. To seal the deal, the BDA handed out some money.

Both specs require the EXACT SAME codec support when it comes to players. It is up to the MOVIE STUDIO to decide which one to use. In any case, the difference in quality between, say, an HD DVD encoded in VC1 and a Blu-Ray Disc encoded in MPEG2 is totally irrelavent because it's hardly there at all.
Both Sony and Phillips did collect royalties on DVD sales, as DVDs used their encoding technology (EFMPlus). And yes, while the exact amount is not known, Time Warner (Warner Bros.) did receive a substantial payment to go BR exclusive, estimated between $400-$500 million - as there were originally much more supportive of HD-DVD.

I can notice the difference between an upconvert DVD and BD. I Am Legend looks absolutely flawless but remember that my HLR is only running at 720p and therefore not taking full advantage of the technology. A quality 1080p screen will show you what BD is all about. I watched Dead Man's Chest for a few minutes on such a setup (a 120Hz 1080p Samsung) and I was taken aback by just how good the picture was. This might sound sensational but scenes in the movie made it seem like I was looking through a window and rather than watching a movie.

Agreed. While us OCN'ers will gobble up technology as fast as it comes out, we are but a tiny spec in the grand scheme of the market. Many people that I talk to are already overwhelmed by the idea of BD and its proper supporting equipment. To say "scratch that...buy THIS!" at this point would further confuse people and probably alienate some from making the dive. Mainstream electonics markets (for Joe Bluecollar and Auntie Smith) actually move quite slowly, especially comparted to the computer market we're all so fascinated with.

Please tell me that you didn't just ask for proof of that?

Geez... were you not awake during the whole Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war? Everyone knows that Sony and it's allies paid off the major studios in a major way to promote Blu Ray over HD-DVD.

They made the choice for us... we as consumers sure as hell didn't decide it.

But honestly, it really doesn't matter ... as some of us just aren't buying it anyway. Ya'll that do... enjoy.

I disagree 100% with that statement. Watching a bluray movie is a vastly different experience to watching a regular or even upscaled movie. I only own 4 bluray movies at the moment (The Wild, Pirates of the Carribean 1, 2, 3) and I watch them on my PS3; the quality is stunning and easily way better than DVD.

Also, I happen to really like "extra content" and there is a cart-load on BR disks.

I dont understand what the fuss is about. . . if they are near identical anyway then who cares who won . . . now we can finally have some progression in the tech and access to all studios w/o having to buy 2 players.

Well.. there were some feature differences and there definitely was a PRICING difference before the pricing war began (i.e. artificial price lowering).

Now that Sony has the monopoly on it... I'd expect them to control pricing to help them re-coup some of their investment.

I recently watched a movie in HD for the first time, and I must say I was impressed.

Perhaps it's time to start thinking of getting a Blu-ray drive...
